It's the same as with serial killers or mass murderers  . The media give them a nicknane and copycats (no pun intended) spring up for their share of the limelight . I seen a great speech before by someone saying the media is partly to blame . They give these sick people monikers like "crossbow cannibal" etc and other weird people with nothing about them want the celebrity status kind of thing

Foxes for sure,when I worked on a golf course we would find at least one headless cat a week from the local foxes.Good job too, cats were forever scratching up the greens.
