What breeds would u use The Irish Wolfhound of today is a re-created breed as the old Wolfhound was extinct and I'd say the nearest type today to the old one would be what the Yanks call their Staghound. 2 or 3 of them should handle a Wolf. cheers Neil I don't get the difference between a deerhound and a stag hound or is a staghound just a lurcher? Todays Irish Wolfhound as far as I know was re-created from a Scottish Deerhound / One of the Masstiff types hybrid crossed back and forth till the Wolfhound bred through. There was an Irish Wolfhound coursing club set up a few years back and a coursing expert made the comment that when the Wolfhounds reached their quarry they showed no desire to kill it. A far cry from the Irish Wolfhound of the Celtic History books where the Celtic Hound ,as it was known, was equal to two men in battle. It's well documented that the Celts went into battle along side their hounds. I'm no expert on the lurchers that the Yanks call their Stags but I believe there's cold blooded Greyhound, Scottish Deerhound and Pitbull in them. But I'm sure there's other blood plus line breeding in their too. Maybe some of our American members could enlighten us ? Then of course there's the infamous video of the Saluki killing the Wolf, which some folk find hard to believe. Greyman 28,798 Posted October 25, 2017 Report Share Posted October 25, 2017 Been reading up on this a little and I,m more confused than when I started, apparently certain wolves gray wolve for example are identical in there DNA make up with domestic dogs, and have cross bred since man first domesticated dogs, so the two main questions that spring to mind are how can you tell if they are pure or not if they carry the same DNA and what damage is it doing if they are genetically identical and have been doing it since the year dot, I know it's never a good idea to put human feelings on animals and I,m sure many would love the ideal of doing this but it is the equivalent of us killing mixed raced people as they are genetically the same but in physical appearance may differ slightly, I,m not stating this as a fact and if anyone with more knowledge than me can correct me please do Quote Link to post Share on other sites

But there are complications regarding which dna markers you assess which has led to some confusion. There may be African wolf Indian wolf or any of the northern european/Asian wolf subspecies. There may even be some golden jackal dna in domestic dogs. For me, I believe the original basenji type domestic dogs came from African wolves and as man spread these dogs went with him and bred with the local wolves as they travelled. Now to complicate things. The gene which causes black wolves is only found in dogs not on other wolf races or types. It is supposed that the extErmination that happened to North American wolves was so relatively rapid that numbers of scatters single wolves were left as relics and they had no breeding options apart from dogs. Hence the black colour entering their gene pool. In Europe the wolf was pushed back more slowly or exterminated completely and this same kind of cross breeding never occurred. 1 Quote Link to post Share on other sites

Hybrid wolves all over the world now, popping up all over social media, very trendy. I even judged one in Wales the other year...! Recon its nothing new either... That Buck dog in Call Of The Wild has a lot to answer for... This ones a crock of shite if you ask me, a set up. The agenda is really cry for help to be noticed for funding etc, me thinks...
