The generation we now like to name terrier types  as,  ie Wheeler ,Nuttal definitely put the bull in and one can only surmise to improve something lacking inherited from the the two supposed founders . As for blacks throwing other colors ,in 35 years ive never seen anything but black with a small white blaze occasionally but then again nothing else has gone in .Those that say their line throws whites etc to my mind do so because of infusion or because someone hasn' told the truth concerning lineage .Makes no odds just saying .Nobody else I know or respect has thrown a color either .Strange that aint it .

But, having read just about everything that's ever been wrote about those 2 gentlemen and having seen or in my possession plenty of pedigrees of their terriers I would be surprised in Cyril Breay ever used a bull terrier or a terrier he knew had bull in it. Frank Buck on the other hand seemed to be a bit more of a maverick and might have, but again, I've never seen any evidence that he did. But I could be wrong ?

People see a strong head, smooth coat and straight away shout "bull". How did the Staff itself get a strong head and jaw as well as a smooth coat ? From breeding for performance, that's how. So why wouldn't there be lines of strong headed smooth terriers who's breeders have bred the best to the best for a job and have no bull blood in them ???? They are out there.

Dont  have the book mate .He' was mentioned in the ped I got from Wheeler but no further back and I'd just like to know a bit more if the infos out there .

If you consider Breay died in the 70's and is on one of these pics with a Great Grandson of Davy, then Davy could have been mid 60's at the latest?  I can imagine a few 'dog sellers' have quoted this book over the years to shift a few pups.

Thanks mate . Bit further back than I have so glad I asked . The Ulswater dog , if anyone is interested was called Rusty if all checks out ., bred by R Tomlinson . . The name Davey then reappears with Wheeler , the sire of my old Razor dog which I got direct from Derek many years back . Wheelers Davey was described as being 1/2 cross to 1/2 cross , the mix being bull and black terrier . Razor was as bully as a terrier gets .

Followed the 3  Nuttals bitches I was gifted mate .First dog I owned as opposed to a bitch and a great worker .He was a devil with other dogs and had to be watched when off the lead .

Sorry FD but haven't got anything in pedigrees that Rabbit Hunter hasn't given you from The Fell Hunter. I have 3 pedigrees here that go back as far as Black Davey but that's it.

Interestingly I looked at Plummers book a while back and seen that Cyril Breay confided in Wally Wyld that there was not one drop of bull blood in his terriers. Yet Rusty (a grandson of Black Davey's) was known to be aggressive with other dogs and would even attack a hound. When Breay offered him to Buck, Buck said no thanks. A smooth coated red or black terrier that went for other dogs would have lads saying it's a bull cross nowadays.

My apologies. I've just looked at The Fell Terrier again and on page 107 there's a pedigree where you'll see 5 more generations on Davey's Dams side.

Perhaps Rabbit Hunter could put a pic of that page up. Hope it helps.
