Jonjon79 13,358
The wind died down a lot today so, I headed off the manor house permission and, got there just before 8. I wanted to give the .177 Falcon Prairie a good run ...... It's been performing well on targets with AA Fields and, a very simple Nikko diamond scope with a No 4 dot reticle. I was after squirrels but, now that a lot of leaves are down, the woods are a much more open space - these things saw me coming a few times I can't blame it all on the woods - I missed a couple of cracking chances ........ The first one I spooked on the ground. He ran straight up a big oak tree. I kept an eye on him, expecting him to take off along the spindly branches and disappear but, he didn't. He got to the high branches, turned around and, ran straight back down the trunk - he stopped before he got to the ground, face down, with his back to me. It should have been a perfect back of head shot - he was only about 25yrds away. I pulled the shot and sent the pellet into the tree next to his head - it's amazing how those squirrels can panic, scrabble and run on a vertical surface. ....... this time he did put in some distance and disappear. I carried on round for a while, watching squirrels scatter as they spotted me (I really must get some feeders sorted) As I rounded a corner in the top woods, there were 2 on the ground, chasing each other and messing about - they were 35/40yrds away - with this scope on x5 mag, both aim points fit their heads nicely. I watched them through the scope when, one of them jumped onto a log and sat still. He gave me a perfect side profile - I lined up the side of his head, took the shot and, feckin missed again. ..... the pellet went slapping through the undergrowth and, the lucky squirrel legged it As you get to the end of the last bit of woods, the trees open out a little - stading just under the branches, looking up, I saw 2 pigeons sat high up in a dead tree. They were both facing into the wind, looking slightly away from me I had a good look at both through the scope - they both had small branches in the way that were moving in the wind. The front one looked easiest but, a heart and lung shot was difficult because of the angle. I had to kind of point the rifle up, almost resting the butt on top of my shoulder - the AA Field hit him with a crack, right where I'd put the dot on his head He crashed down through the branches, with a bit of flapping and, landed hard in the ivy below. This is Prairie is a really nice rifle to use - it's light and easy to carry and point. Just cycling the action and letting a pellet go feels smooth - it gives a very reassuring feeling that someone took pride in their work when this was made. 5 Quote Link to post
Jonjon79 13,358
While I was walking back to the car with the weight of a pigeon in my game bag, I decided to have a cheeky look at the polly tunnels One of them is full of chilli plants - there's all sorts in there - rows and rows of different coloured, different shaped chillies. I started to get a bit of an idea so, I looked at a few and, took a red one that I liked the look of. When I got home, I breasted the pigeon and, cooked it with red wine and the chilli - it went in a toasted sandwich with lettuce and a little bit of cheese. It was bloody lovely, if I do say so myself 5 Quote Link to post
