riohog 5,816
I've a son who's diagnosed as ASD he's 2n half. Believe me it's real. . He may have to wear a helmet to stop him injuring himself from repeatedly headbutting walls or doors if he feels uncomfortable. Constantly walking in circles looking up all the time. Rolling his eyes back in his head. Also he's non verbal so trying to understand what he needs or wants is exhausting. So yes it's real. thats not something i would like to deal with it must be very testing for your family good luck

Its hard work, but he can communicate his basic needs and wants with sign language, there is progress but its very slow..

tatsblisters 10,540
Lads serious question I've a nephew with autism it seems so widespread now but when I was young I never heard of it or knew anyone with it . Is autism a new thing or is it something that's always been about ? My oldest grandson who is now 17 has a mild form of autism he went through a main stream school and is now at college doing a carpentry course .I am still of the opinion that its some thing to do with the MMR vacines as I and my daughter witnessed a change in his behaviour after having the jabs even though the exsperts claim their is no link to autism with the MMR jab. Blackbriar 8,569
One of my nephew's has Williams-Bueren syndrome....an extremely rare genetic condition, that wasn't diagnosed until he was 6 or 7 years old. My sister has only found 2 doctors in Britain who have come across it, and my nephew was finally diagnosed by Professor Williams, who the condition is named after ! He is 22 now, but he is "globally retarded" - intellectually, developmentally and socially, with a high degree of autism. He has a mental age of around 10, and is unlikely to develop any further. He cannot go out alone and could never live independently. My sister's life with him has been very difficult from day 1, often pushing her to the edge of sanity (no exaggeration !), and she has constantly struggled to find proper support and help for him. She was, and still is, constantly stressed and exhausted, as her whole life has to be organised around him. If I'm honest, I have absolutely no idea how she has filed for this long, and if it weren't for the help of her family and friends, the boy would have been institutionalised years ago !.....(I'll leave it there, you get the idea). I've seen "The Undateables", and was always of a mind that the programme is meant to give the viewer an insight into the diificulties that some disabled people face, in the most basic aspects of their daily lives. I must have missed the review that said it was a comedy ! My grandmother always said you should never mock the afflicted !

Personally I don't think there is a link. I believe symptoms start to show around the same age as MMR jabs are given. I certainly wouldn't advise anyone to refrain from giving their kids the vacine. mushroom 13,395
Both my parents are disabled and I guess those with disabled children worry about the same things I do.... who is going to look after them if anything happens to me or when I am gone! Can't believe some people (eg ginger) who think it's funny to take the piss out of them directly. Is that so that you feel better about yourself? I hope you never have a child with disabilities because that child would have a piss poor future with a cnut like You!

Blackbriar 8,569
The supposed link between MMR vaccines and autism has been utterly and totally discredited, and the Professor concerned struck off the medical register !

I know they've said they're safe but I couldn't risk it
