Is autism a new thing or is it something that's always been about ?

Is autism a new thing or is it something that's always been about ?Its always been around in some form or another, theyve just given it a name now. When I was at school, the C stream always struggled with studies and concentration. The school used to let them do as they liked within reason. I suppose there must have been a few in that stream that had problems. ?
