Just wondering on people's opinions on this bird puller, I brought a bucket at the Midland to try it. Have any of you used it and if so what do you think of it?

What's it smell of , most use aniseed. It's a bit like fishing bait in my view, more success probably gained from strawing rides , getting food and water down and keeping a quiet roost, Atb with it.

It doesn't actually say what's in it, it says natural spices but I can defo smell aniseed in it! We don't have huge problems with wondering birds but It's more that the shoot next door puts down way less birds than us and then puts cover crops and feeders all along ours and their boundary to attract our birds so my thought was to perhaps try a bit of this stuff mixed in the wheat to entice them back. Obviously regular dogging in is a big thing but thought this may also help...

So those who shoot next to you are hardly shoot gentlemen - bit of night work required. I really dislike ungentlemanly behaviour almost as much as poaching.

 

We use bird puller and I think that once you use it, its hard not to continue - TBH I dont think theres a difference - as said before by Joe, my order of priorities is; cover, water, feed, quiet and regular dogging in (daily).

Dont use diesel on their feeders its like pointing at your self and saying 'I did it'. Better their roost is disturbed. I'd consider a feed ride away from the boundary fed well and regularly or auto feeders

This is just a pet thought of mine but I wonder if birds ever wander to find grit for their crops. Grouse prove that game birds will take supplied grit and the number of pheasants on verges can't be just a coincidence, anybody tried supplying grit near your feeders?

Thanks very much for your thoughts chaps, some good points. Daily dogging in seems to be doing the job. I’m still feeding pellets in the pens and wheat outside the pens and it really seems to be bringing the birds back in well in the evenings.

As a test, I tried some aniseed in one feeder that was alway quiet, the birds always empty that one first, so I have stuck with aniseed, seeing really good numbers around now.

Alright Rob, I’ve done a similar thing. Put two feeders next to each other in each pen,one with the stuff in one without to see which one goes down quicker

The answer there is then don’t let the feeders get empty!

 

I’ve just read the ingredients in the poult pellets we use and they have traces of it in them...

I don't use puller over expensive for us what I do use is the cheapest pigeon conditioner I can get £10 a bag 15kg full of aniseed and maze I only put it on my boundary drives yes it isn't as strong as the puller but you will see the difference also on my boundary drives we are pulling wild pheasant off a peat moor so we streach the spring I have been many morning and seen wild birds looking at spring and pecking very reluctantly with a pulled spring the slightest touch you get a good fall no good in hi volume areas but works on boundaries for us . Concentrate annissed mixed with good grade wheat is as good a puller as any and cheapish too .Two drop per feeder ,mix in well .Bad year for straying here until the berries are gone after Xmas and the harder weather hits us .
