Greyman 28,798
I do the same recipe but use vodka, we don't have many sloe,s down here this year but last year was a blinder, this year we seem to have lots of rose hips so I,ll be making syrup, not the same buzz as vodka but really good medicinal property,s plus natural and free

Something to do with the sugars breaking down? Is it just old school tales?

low plains drifter 10,676
Got my eye on a couple of bushes with some good sized sloes, like the look of adding a tin of strawberries in juice to the mix
Chaff 3,622
Think sloe is a bit of a posh thing my self, just weakens the prof if your just adding sloe to gin. Can't beat a good apple wine IMO Each to there own ah.

Something to do with the sugars breaking down? Is it just old school tales?I dont know if it makes any difference to the taste to wait for a frost but putting them in the freezer would have the same effect on the berries.Another tradition was that every berry had to be pricked with a silver pin. I can tell you for a fact that this makes no difference at all ? I like to add a few drops of almond essence to my sloe gin.
