There is an English expression "BENDING THE KNEE" which means both literally and figuratively to show obedience or admit dominance but is this other thing is something new which doesn't even make sense. It's now been adopted to refer to the practice of players kneeling on one knee rather than standing for the national anthem which should be obvious from the context of the thread.
