porkypowell 2
You need a dead rat I would cadge trap a rat and dispatch it humanely then let the dog play with the carcass once the dog knows what it smells like and feels. Spend some time walking the ground and let nature take it course. Ferrets would make the process a lot quicker and more fun. Best of luck ratting is a lot of fun and the first step on the ladder for a pup. Simon Quote Link to post

Big bald beautiful 1,231
get it out where rats are known to run, barns are a nice place to start as they have less chance to get away. hand catching one is always a good start and showing the dog that. Quote Link to post

Having access to a lot of land, barns, stables etc, I feel I'll go the live bolt way to get the dog started. I control rats, rabbits and moles legaly with poisons, but I want the pup to have some sport. Thanks for you input, appreciate it. Quote Link to post

fireman 11,003
Can you hunt these places at night with a lamp as rats are nocternal and there may be more numbers around at night?,if not then you could try baiting with some grain a little way away so your pup will have a chance at a little course get in between the rats and their home and your pup should have a chance block the runs if you can, a board placed across it will do.A live catch trap could help things along as would taking another dog out with him even just once to show him the way,he may need a bit of help to get the first one under his belt but the more you get out with him the more he will learn.Have fun!.
