forest of dean redneck 11,596
An that's where the dogs start to get fecked up when people insist they got to be certain colour or size. Working dogs should be bred for being good at their jobs Russell's ,whippets, collie are the first to come to mind all vary in appearances in the breed but so long they do their jobs who cares. 1 Quote Link to post
ggw 5
WAS ORIGINALLY ASKING ABOUT VARIATION IN SIZE BUT SOME INTERESTING REPLIES AND THOUGHTS ON SALUKIS. Has any one read that saluki book and if so how good is it ? As for the Doberman colours I believe a black greyhound was used in the original production. Isnt black a dominant colour ,also it would depend on what they were crossed with. Quote Link to post

robertb123 372
There's a book on saluki breed 'saluqi coursing hound of the east' its likely the most comprehensive book written on any breed of dog hundreds of pics taken over years n years , every variation on saluki in it , surprisingly a little look like our saluki lurchers a http://midbarsalukis.com/desertphotogalleries/histpropo.php Had a look on that website and there were pictures of a saluki with a belt around its loin, it's supposed to strengthen the loin and help the dog lose weight, does/did this work and do they still do it in the east? wearing a belt has done nothing for my gut! Gilbey 1,434
Prob just a daft custom like ear cropping, poor sod looks terrible didn't realise it left them as bad as that Quote Link to post
desertbred 5,490
Load of cobblers most working salukis in COOare on basic meagre rations so excess weight wouldnt be a problem unless its the Arab wizz kids , as for strengthening any thing restricting blood flow would have the opposite effect 1 Quote Link to post

Flat bread, some fruit, lots of rice and if lucky some cooked meat thrown in. The odd time, a horse or sheep would die, this would be given to them, as it was too old to eat for themselvs..lol Amazingly, they were fit and strong healthy salukis, worked all day no bother. desertbred 5,490
Does dipping there feet in henna really help protect them? It helps to give a bit of protection against the heat of the ground and is also a mild natural antiseptic for cuts and nicks on the roughground.. Some people use it to decorate the animals also and dying hair Quote Link to post

Its likely what dogs have lived on since there were dogs and with a little bit of an upgrade what they do well on today. 1 Quote Link to post
low plains drifter 10,474
Wonder how far removed the flat bread, and rice diet is from some of the sacks of cheap wheat based dry foods used over here, remember twenty plus years ago the lads that I knew were'nt too knowledgeable on the feeding and conditioning that is talked about today, but the dogs managed a bit of running alright 2 Quote Link to post
desertbred 5,490
To much protien is no good for working pures or heavily saturated x,s a higher percentage of carbs usually gets good results balanced with chicken , fish oil etc. 1 Quote Link to post
forest of dean redneck 11,596
When you think back when I was a kid 70-80s lot of the running dogs were owned by people who either couldn't or wouldn't buy dog food and they were kept same way ,fed on table scraps or part of what they caught. No because the digestive system has evolved over thousands of years and salukis have adapted to eat whats available in COO game and meat are considered a luxury and anything caught the dogs are not at the top of the family pecking orderhave you not noticed salukis and saturated saluki x,s are twats for digging this goes back to eating beetles worms slugs etc to supplement their diet so they grub the ground out of instinct 4 Quote Link to post
