M-Dog 1
Hi guys, I'm thinking of getting a lurcher as a family pet and to do some rabbiting (nothing major), family members have had them before and I know they have great temperments around the house and great workers at the same time. Just wondering what cross people would recommend would be best for me? Thanks, M-Dog Quote Link to post

PJCaswell 114
Think twice. All the lurchers with great temperament have an owner with time and they know what are doing, or know someone who knows what they are doing. Be honest, if you don’t have the time get a pug On type: all of them are great but… If you have a small house get a whippet cross. If you have a bigger house get a grey cross. If you have OCD get a saluki cross. If you want a dog smarter than you get a collie cross. If you want a dog that is friendly but could theoretically kill an elk get a bull cross You will never go wrong with a beddy cross Finally, if it’s living in the house get a crate. 8 Quote Link to post
Bobtheferret 1,252
Personally think lurchers are great around the house and especially with kids. My old whippet beddlington cross was as good a house dog and family pet as you could ever wish for and caught me 100's of rabbits to. Good luck 1 Quote Link to post

Hi PJCaswell, thankyou for your reply. I now have plenty of time to spare time for a dog, used to spend most of my spare time walking/ seeing friends and family members dogs and it is a decision I have thought about for quite some time but held off because I didn't feel like I could give one the time it needs in the past. I now have a 2 bedroom medium size house with quite a big back garden and lots of pass time on my hands. I think I am leaning towards a whippet or grey cross, these are what I had in mind but thought I would ask you people on here because you have more knowledge and experience with these types of dogs. roybo 2,873
Not knowing you...maybe just a lurcher X lurcher ?,from laid back friendly well adjusted parents ,that isn't too hyper or manic 2 Quote Link to post
terryd 8,601
Had a beddy whippet once that was so quiet you never new she was about. Very small and never in the way and you could pop under your arm. Extremely laid back but she could certainly nail rabbits. A real pleasure. That was just her and they are all different mind But by the sound of it you don't want some rip roaring hunting machine at least if you want a quiet life. Little bit of a lottery I guess but you can try and get things in your favour Edited August 15, 2017 by terryd 1 Quote Link to post
bird 9,970
Not knowing you...maybe just a lurcher X lurcher ?,from laid back friendly well adjusted parents ,that isn't too hyper or manic spot on roy , have look at the size of them, if not to big say 22-23 in and nice calm temps have a pup there . a nice x thats been said nice beddy x grey , as with they greyhound in there you get quite a laid back temp, and this x just the 2 breeds in it norm go 22-24in and thats not over big i dont think. i know alot go for the 3 breeds beddy, whippet, grey, but for me i perfer just the 2 breeds beddy, grey and the pups are like peas in pod all the same a good x if you can get it . Aussie Whip 4,141
If you have it as a pet is one thing but once you start working it you have a responsability to give it work or you'll end up with an unhappy dog which could end up a liability due to boredom esp if from working parents.
