I was talking to a chap yesterday, and he goes to Ireland a lot, the lads over there only rate the Wheaton in a lurcher he says, how do the lads on this forum rate the cross?

Ive hve been running them a long while now..

when bred from a game wheaten and a game greyhound you will have a good honest lurcher.

They suit me for what i want to do and i would never change!

This day and age your lucky to drop on any real game bred Wheaton x's unless your in the no, as for gameness etc the Wheaton is some animal very good at there job some say just pits with thick coats

I've had and ran dogs with Wheaton blood in the mix and I found them to be decent dogs a mate of mines got a good Wheaton x dog at the moment some people favour them over a bull type I think that's because of the coat but it's horses for courses ?

I have wheatens and have had first and second crosses.Short back no speed rarely a nose, this isn't Australia or eastern Europe we don't have the game!I I know theres good ones for terrier work but all round pot filling lurchers I am yet to see a great one!

what about 3/4 grey 1/4 wheaten.long back,plenty of speed in theory

I've always liked a touch of wheaton in a longdog. Maybe in a few years my pal will put a greyhound dog over his bitch and I will take one on. Atb dc

English bull was put into some strains of Wheatens in the south in the past they created very game and stupid animals I have some of these.However I also have a very old strain that in recent years had a little American pit entered into the line, from this I have one bitch she would talk to you.I have ferreted with her shot pheasant and retrieved rabbits she has of course performed as wheaten should while dug also.She has a great nose and can be hunted with other dogs while beating cover I bred her to other Wheatens but could never get anything close.If she had been a dog she was ideal for lurcher breeding, but the others brought very little.I have heard about smart wheatens but apart from this one I have not seen them.A lurcher must have brains speed and heart no doubt they bring heart.I have a 3/4 in my kennel at the moment bottomless heart ,but very short on brains and speed.No disrespect to the ancient breed but if you keep breeding for gameness alone that's all you get.

Why would you breed wheatens and hope to get a ferreting dog are a retriever? And as far as short back, no nose, no speed goes your talking out your hole.
