skycat 6,173
To me it looks MAL nourished, as in fed crap food and not given the right sort or enough exercise: maybe taken out once a week and run hard. Seen a lot of p***y dogs look like that: a bit bloated in the gut area where there should be a good tuck up behind the ribs if the dog was getting proper regular exercise and the right sort of grub. Even for this sort of dog there is a definite lack of muscle in the hind legs. BUT it is difficult to tell from a photo: be interesting to see more pics of the dog on the ground moving along. Meerihunter 7
IMHO it comes down to the relationship the dogs have with their owners, my Salukis will generally have nothing to do with other people but will work with me. I think the point you make about the couple of siberians you know of are fine off lead, yet everything you read tells you you can't let them off. I think people just take this as fact and do try for themselves, of course once you start restricting dogs like these you are really just making problems for yourself if your dog does ever happen to get off the lead, I honestly think this is where the problem lies. I don't think anyone should expect border collie ,lab, ghd, etc type backflips on comand but they are rational thinking dogs that understand the things going on around them just fine. As for the condition of the dog in the photo posted above, as far as I am aware (considering the photo is from my forum) is that it is a inmature dog 3/4 Saluki 1/4 Afghan. His chest has dropped and he has filled out since before you all jump on the band wagon. I've lost count of the amount times I come on here to see people saying that some young saluki or saluki saturated cross is malnurished. These salukiXafghans are bred to run jackrabbits in extremely harsh cactus and rock desert, where most of the luchers on here would be wrecked in no time. You can keep your fast greyhoundsXs, I've seen the light and I'll keep this type of dog of over anything else. Regards Mark Quote Link to post
Dawn B 212
Do you like Azawakhs Mark? See I love sighthounds, all of them, particularly the smooth Saluki, Sloughi and the Azawakh. I have seen a few in this country, but they dont compare to the likes of some of the others around the world. I dont think anyone works them here, their skin is like paper, it rips very easily, but I really think they are beautiful and I expect could do a days work. Dawn. Quote Link to post
Meerihunter 7
I like all the saluki types, the Azawakhs are very striking and I would expect they might be good on the fens I would like to see one run there but for some reason they just don't seem to course with them or the sloughis in the western world. maybe it is because of the coursing ban across most of erope where most of these dogs are. For my type of hunting they just are not suited I like mooching about thro woodland and rough ground so something a bit more robustis my choice. Interesting my Salukis are actually tougher skinned than our lurchers. Something like these would be my ideal size and type. Quote Link to post
Dawn B 212
Yes they are native types, look a bit smaller, wider fronted and more heavier boned? Like them, I like anything like that. I think Salukis are tougher skinned from what ive seen, certainly more so than Greys or Whippets. Sloughis are like Salukis, i think a Sloughi could make a decent worker, they are fairly biddable. Meerihunter 7
Yes they are Kazakh Tazi I really liked what I saw out there. I'd like to bring in Kazakh dog in the future ideally second generation dogs from the US brought in via the pet passport scheme, failling that I am tempted to cross my Saluki bitch to a well boned but not over tall bare pastern/hocked Afghan. Surprised its smooth all over given that both breeds are coated. I know you get some smooth coated Salukis (lovely!) but cant see Afghan in it? Best of luck with him/her hope it does well for you.
