low plains drifter 10,358
I've seen any amount of hares take off like rockets from their forms, a long slip on a hare that is already running and trying to get away is the hardest, sporting test for the dog, like the sound of being able to slip a dog on a hare a thousand metres away as I like to watch the run up, but how close does the dog get to some of these hares before they even know the dog is approaching them ? desertbred 5,490
Hares are on their own territory 24/7, a strong hare is fit and a top notch athlete, they are always up for a run and fancy their chances , they never get into flying mode until the dog is on them ,they know where the dog is and dont get the ears back until its escape mode kicks in. A lot pf experienced dogs will run wide or in an arc to try to confuse the hare as to what they are actually after, many a good courser will sit to the left or right of the hare especially to turn it from cover or drop a gear to let the hare settle into its comfort zone before ratcheting it up a notch and then dropping off again thats an experienced dog on a fit top notch hare the weaker ones will be knocked over in a window box.. If the hare is really up for it , it will try to straight line the dog seen it happen many times towing a dog from pillar to post, if it comes under the cosh it will go to ground, use hedge rows, ditches tracks and tarmac, drop into a seat even somersault over the dog to give it the slip. nothing better than two animals at the top of their game trying to out smart each other thats the adrenalin rush rather than the kill.
