Remember Snowy taking six from four slips when she won the Forley Legends, maybe a more exciting style to watch, Foxy aka the money spinner was his best as a match runner

is there a difference between coursing and matching then? i always thought they were pretty much the same thing, chasing hares with a dog bred to do it. i am genuinly asking mate. i am a lamper so dont know a great deal about daytime stuff as i dont need to.

Matching is when it's dog vs dog for money mate. Coursing to me is just going out running hares could be wrong as like you I'm just a lamper of rabbits ??

2hundred quid beys back in the day very common trucks trailers hoses etc all gambled in a match foxy was much in the same calibre has a top marksman they don't miss when it matters sixty plus unbeaten matches ,now that's a feat that will Neva be matched or surpassed . i believe that puts her in lay mans turns has top running bitch of long ears . Keep the rest they don't come close .atb bunnys.

I just wonder how many hares are actually given a hundred yards or more in matches because most of the dvds I've seen the hare is lucky if it gets twenty yards, I saw one DVD in which jimmy ford slipped a dog he'd just paid thousands for on an hare which hadn't been given ten yards never mind a hundred and that was the same with most of the so called top guys.

They might as well have a greyhound/whippet and my real pet hate is people running out of season, chasing milky does, it makes me sick and my blood boil.

Sorry for the rant but in my view it's not on unless the farmer asks you too and even then I would be reluctant, maybe I'm to soft.

The mere mention of giving law in a match or course brings looks of either disbelief or disdain from most of the running dog lads now. Usually they prefer it to be steaming in the seat or just getting up to have a look round. The usual argument is based on the premise that the other lad will slip straight away on sight and every ones idea of 50 or a hundred yards varies wildly. There is a good argument for independent slippers especially in matches . if your out for something for the pot then distance of slips isnt important but in a competition or match then the playing field should be ability of the dog to match the hare it is slipped on not who can bend the rules to gain an advantage that isnt what sport should be about. My slipping policy is if the dog sees it and its in the same county fire it off then its up to the dog to get on or not.

I remember there was a competition to guess how far yards was, at a show a long time ago. There were pegs in the ground, at intervals, ranging from 30 to 100 yards out. 90% of people who went in for the guessing game said that 40 yards was at least . 100 yards fair law has most people twitching violently as they see the hare running away and thinking that their dog will never get up on it. To get a good slipper who can properly judge distance is a rare thing, or was, should I say.

I remember a few years ago asking 4 so called top dog men to mark a hundred yards on a field, the one who got the nearest was still only 60 yards, so all those hundred yard slips suddenly became 60, I used to play a lot of golf and can pretty much guarantee 100 yards every time, it's an easy pitching wedge.

I agree with db if the dog can see it and it's on the right land then I'll slip it, I've no time for people who slip under their feet and then boast they've got a champion.

Oh and obviously my dog will be fit.

Distance made no difference to the top animals ,in fact it was an advantage at times they only run up to them then the course begins of course deep winter on we'll run land it's different but the best know when ta gear up under foot slips do often happen I don't believe this has a bearing when the long ears are strong .atb bunnys.

A couple of years ago I was doing some work with the hare preservation society and was amazed to find out that a hare cannot get up to top speed until its run at least eighty yards and that's with no pressure so distance certainly makes a difference and in my experience only good well conditioned dogs will catch when given proper law and I mean in Dec Jan and Feb, not in august and September.
