If you're getting horse flesh ALWAYS find out how it died.

A horse put down by a vet using a general anesthetic has enough in it to kill dozens of dogs.

A horse killed by a humane bolt is 100%.

Horses get the bullet mate. Drugs work out expensive in horse doses and you cant use the meat, then have to dispose of it.

Horses DO get killed by injection and only yesterday morning I heard of a bullock killed by anesthetic. So never take anything for granted.

When I mentioned that there's enough anesthetic in a horse to kill a lot of dogs that's because I've known where one dead horse fed caused over 20 hounds to die.

It's up to you if you want to take it for granted.

In my experience and knowing two knacker men. Most, if not all horses around here get shot and used for food. I mean how else would you get rid of the carcase?

If you know the cost of putting a dog down with barbiturates, the favoured pink juice. Then work out the cost of getting a horse euthanized and the feck off size of the syringe!

Any way who the feck can get their hands on meat like that? What with all the MAFF legislation put in place. It'll come from a very wrong black market.

There is a horse knacker up the A5 by me & I was going to see if they sold it.. out of interest do they have to be clear from veterinary drugs or is that just if the meats going into the food chain. as far as i know they just slaughter there

That's a good question Kay as a lot of horses get slaughtered as a last resort after veterinary treatment has failed and not because they've been reared for meat.

I wouldn't ask the knacker himself because he'd just tell you what you want to hear but find out if any of the local greyhound men or hunts get their flesh from him and ask them are they happy ?

If a knacker man sold drug meat, that would be the last meat he sold.

 

I think if you fed your dog drug meat, it will have to eat a fair bit to kill it?

In local knackerys to me they only sell horse meat from animals that walk in. Any horses dead on arrival are incinerated. Cattle seem to be different they can arrive dead and still used for dog meat. It's slightly smellier but 50% cheaper than fresh beef that has walked in. I would imagine the Agriculture vets and knackery are corresponding with each other on how cattle were treated and the fact the horse industry is less regulated they probably wouldn't trust any carcasses coming in.
