mackay 3,404
Why is it that lurchers and terriers are so cheap compared to other dogs, you see dogs of various breeds selling for two to three times the price of a well bred hunting dog and all they are required to do is lay by the fire and fart whereas we expect miracles from our canine hunting companions yet they fetch only a fraction of the price. Ask your average hunting man more than a hundred quid for a well bred, well reared pup and you visibly see the colour drain from their face. I noticed pups advertised in the for sale thread for £120 not much response untill they dropped to £50 and then people started posting.....you can't go wrong at that price....or I'd have one at that price, what as opposed to the original price of £70 more. Don't give me the the excuse that the hunting fraternity are poor working class people, it doesn't wash most people spend more on a night out than how they value a pup. So why is this, is it because the average lurcher/terrier man goes through so many dogs he would bankrupt himself if he paid any more, or is it as the title says, we're tight arsed gits. I think the reason is that most genuie dog men aren't breeding for a proffit. They are trying to better their stock. With the KC reg show dogs alot of people are making good money selling to unaware members of the public. How many times have you herd pet owners say "oh he's a pure breed" or "he's a pedegree"? lurchers are mongrals - but well bred mongrals Quote Link to post

Dan Edwards 1,134
I wouldnt sell a pup to nobody for no amount of money. When I raise a litter, I try to keep every pup and if someone that I know will use them and cull hard asks me for one then I will let one go. Otherwise, there aint noway in hell a pup is leaving my yard. Quote Link to post

Scallywag 78
I think the question should be the other way round - how do pedigree breeders get away with charging that much for puppies which might not even be up to much? Quote Link to post
FAT CITY 0
working dogs at a workings man price Quote Link to post
Paid 935
I agree Mackay, I also think if the price was higher, you would see more people putting more time into the dog they have, rather than what you see a lot of on these sites at the moment, so many trying to punt on adult dogs. Guest little lurcher
I think the question should be the other way round - how do pedigree breeders get away with charging that much for puppies which might not even be up to much? right as a pedigree whippet breeder and a lurcher girl, who works all her dogs , i will try to answer your question, with my whippet i have selected stock to breed from which will hopefully produce brilliant temp dogs, with work and show ability, but still be a very excellent family pet, i want the best homes for my pups as i have raised and reared them well to do what i want for them, no expense is spared with health and nutrition of bitches and then pups, i think 300-400 is a far price with vaccs and chipping included, if people dont want to pay it they dont buy? however saying that if someone came along with only say, 250 and were the right home for the dog then i would allow the dog to go at that price? hard as it may sound , if something wasnt right with a puppy that could affect its future health or well being then i would pts? most pedigree breeders have a very good idea of what their puppies will do or be capable of due to careful selection of lines and knowing when a mating wont produce the goods as well as keeping whippets and lurchers i also keep italian greyhounds, now there is a very ig demand for these pups and i get so angry seeing the prices these dogs fetch with known health problems!!!! look on epupz, around the 1000 mark!!!!! for something that is red for money and cant do anything other than be a companion!!! however, i am hated in the italian world as i do get out and rabit with mine!!! they are bred strong enough to run free and bounce over the lurchers whippets etc!!! i will stand by my breeding of these when i do bred and they wont be at silly prices!!!
