david hancock dogs

i fancy a three quarter bred collie greyhound and been thinking of going to david hancock for one .what i want to know is what they are like if i do from people with first hand experience of dogs from the man and not just hearsay thanks

I had one and thought she was great. Easy to train and a good enough worker for me. If you can find someone who is breeding a litter to keep one back then id get it from them as the pups will be better socilised and have had more attention but with Hancock you will get the cross you want, A genuine 3.4 grey 1.4 collie.

You will find that alot of people who have Hancock dogs like them. Alot of the people who have had them and failed to train them blame it on Hancock. What they dont mention is the other dogs they have failed with, still, it must be Hancocks fault though!!

and some people are easily satisfied ....and dont no what a good dog is ,,,,,yes you will get the odd decent dog ...but is it worth the risk .....to big of a risk for me to take..... ..its a hard enough game as it is ..why stack the odds against yourself .......just my opinion .......

 

 

Very true bud everyone has diferant standards. But how many people read some of Plummers books and think Hancock dogs ae the best? Quite alot of people. Then they buy a pup thinking it will be a world beater and stick it in a kennel until its old enough for a run but because its a hancock dog the expext it to work straight away.

 

No matter where a dog comes from you need to put the effort in as im sure you are aware. Reading some of your posts you obviously know what you are talking about and Im sure you know that there are tones of guys keeping lurchers that dont have a clue. But ts never their fault, you knoe the type i mean.

 

Yes some dogs are shite from him but there are not any guarantees with any litter. Take the name away and its a collie lurcher.

One of my mates bought a cracking looking 3/4 grey 1/4 border x off him a few years ago and he's a cracker. Great looking and works well.

However, two of the guys in my old dog club bought dogs off him about 6 or 7 years ago, one turned out okay while the other developed a heart problem at an early age. The vet reckoned it could be a hereditary thing, so he called Hancock and told him - he never even questioned it or asked for a vets report, just said "Oh yes, well bring him back and I'll give you another pup or your cash back" Take what you want from that.

(I know I probably didn't help very much, but it does demonstrate both sides of the coin)

I'm not promoting Hancock and given the choice then I would opt for a pup from working parents, but, if we could guarantee honesty then it would be interesting to see that all the people who failed with a dog from Hancock, how many other dogs they've failed with.

Sadly some people have selective memories when it comes to this.

As there are a few lads on here that have hancock dogs World Hunters for one and if you take time to read some of his threads about his dog Storm you'll find the lad thinks the world of him But then again you could be right he's probably rubbish.

 

Pigeonhill it would be worth giving World Hunters a PM to ask him about Storm if I'm right he's a 3/4 bred Hancock.

your right there no guarantees with any litter .....and iam sure this has been said a thousand times if the parents are doing the bizz and the parents before them were doing the bizz then iam sure your pup will have a better chance off bizz .......i got a feeling that non of hancocks .....dogs are doing the bizz ..... ..

Yes makes sence to me. The reason I bought my dog from him was because he had the cross I wanted and if i am being honest id read all the books and herd the name etc and thought the dogs were something special.

 

Like I said, I was happy with mine, but we(my wife and I) put alot of effort in with the training and perhaps we were one of the lucky ones?

Its like any dog any breeding put the time in and get the rewards, its easy enough to blame the breeder dont get me wrong in the past from what iv heard it wasnt the best condition kennels, but i went down when my dog was 3weeks old to check the conditions for myself and they was nothink like the horror stories i also heard but he may have built them recently but they were all concrete with metal caged pens, all dry with fresh water and food couldnt complain.

 

when it comes to the dogs it self you know what your getting and can be sure that they are what you expect to buy.

 

you could go get a dog from working stock put no time into it and be dissapointed exactly the same with hancock dogs dont put time in then you wont get the best out of the dog,

 

id go for the border cross as aposed to the beardies but thats just my opinion.

 

my dog has exceeded my expectations but i must just be a lucky fooker then

 

but best of luck with what ever you choose mate and get the dog out from and early age retreiveing shot game i think it helps alot.

 

but this is just all my opinion, there will be others that dissagree with what i say but everyone is welcome to there own oppinion.
