comanche 2,948
I've met and passed the time with several well known people Bernard Cribbins, Nigel Havers and Nick Embricos. All chatted with us Beaters at a Shoot. I had met the latter before and also met ,mucked out on a couple of occasions , his Grand- National winning horse Aldaniti. Did a wasps' nest for Joan Plowright ,many nests for Norman Tebbit and his truly lovely wife , several for Wayne Fontana ,one for Rick Parfitt. Met Oliver Reed twice. The first time he was alone in a pub and was charm personified to our group . The second time was about a week later and he was like a school bully spoiling for a fight ,but l guess the difference was that he had a couple of tame goons with him as back-up . I met Colin Willock , mate of Jack Hargreaves, the producer of the Survival TV series and writer on fieldsports and fishing ,at a small Shoot . Absolute Gentleman. Jack Hargreaves had the shock of his life when my brother rushed up to him at a Game fair and thrust a ferret I'd bought from a stall into his hands. I don't know if it was the fact that a small boy had thrown a Ferret at him or if the boy's demand of "Please bless my Ferret Mr Hargreaves" had thrown him but he didn't look comfortable handling the creature. "He muttered " Nice ferret" threw it back pretty sharp and accepted my Dad's apologies with better grace than he'd accepted the Ferret. One famous meeting sticks in my mind.I did a bit of work for the ex wife of a member of a well known electro rock/pop band and once ,in the capacity of driver, escorted her to a dinner party hosted by the ex wife of another group member . I found myself sitting next to little blonde Australian chap and togethet we spent pretty much the evening trying to make a list of famous Australian pop and rock bands. Even counting Frank Ifield it wasn't a long list but it was fun ,especially when we started singing Kevin Bloody Wilson songs to the rest of the diners. Asked what he did for a living, he simply said he played cricket . Pushed he added that it was for Hampshire. Anything involving a ball is alien to me so it meant nothing. I do have a friend who lives for the sound of leather on willow though. When , in passing , l asked if he knew any blonde Australians who played for Hampshire my mate called me something beginning with C and simply said " Yeh, Shane Warne". Really Mac? Crazy that mate. Was a mega event when the races were on from what I remember. Its 19 years ago now. I don't recall actually seeing those flats although I must have done. I remember seeing the local less unfortunate folk all with the papers studying the runners and riders. I think Mick Kinane was doing well over there then!!
