shotgun chokes

Recommended Posts

i have just been offered an aya side by side 12 bore, not a new gun by any standards but in good condition,my question is,finding out what chokes its firing at,...i have browsed the net and cant really find any choke charts that i can really refer to with the stamping on the gun,or is it just me,probably the latter being the case, any of you lads out there who are up on there guns that can help me out would be much appreciated....thanks

pretty simple mate either buy or borrow a choke gauge from a gun shop and stick it in the end of each tube it'll only go in so far and thatll tell you how its choked.

hope this helps.

p.s. if its an aya yeoman i had one years ago that was choked 1/2 and full, very hard hittting gun

thanks for that.... :victory: yes i believe it is an aya yeomen, just out of curiosity, can you remember what was stamped on the barrels indicating what choke it was..?

sorry mate cant remember at all but ive seen a few yeoman's over the years and most if not all have been 1/2 and full choke but as said only way to be sure is to gauge the barrels.

If you remove the fore-end you should see some stars stamped on the bottom of the barrels.

One star- full, 2 stars 3/4, 3 stars 1/2, four stars 1/4, 5 stars imp cyl. I used to have a yeoman and that was 1/2 & full.

Hope this helps!

i just checked over the barrels ,there are no stars on there and there are no marks as millet described, but similar to what zap says there is 18 on one barrel and 18.5 on the other, thats all i have to offer, :hmm: i think a trip to the gunsmiths is in order to have it choke tested,

Hafod,I think the 18.0 and 18.5 are the barrel tube sizes in millimeters (mm). It was probably normal practice to make one barrel slightly larger than the other. English guns used to use slightly larger tubes than the continental makers, though that may not be true now.

1/4 choke is a 10 thou (.010") restriction on cylinder size, whatever that may be,so a gun made with tubes of .725" would have a smaller (slightly)hole in the end than one made with .732" tube, even though both are 1/4 choked. Even if you found markings for choke, someone could have had it opened up to suit themselves. Most fixed choke guns were sold tight,in at least one barrel, so you could use it like that or have it altered for your circumstances.A gunsmith can measure the tubes with a barrel gauge, and then the choked area to establish what you have. It takes only a couple of minutes and is usually free.

Don't get too hung op on chockes...Apparently in the BASC Jan/Feb 2007 Shooting and Conversation mag they did some "experiments" (page...18-20) and they showed choke (apart from cylinder) has no effect on pellet density at various ranges/wads.

Cheers

This article is for 28g, we are talking 12g here.

I think you had better read it all again anyway, page 19 Table 1 clearly shows the different density for different choke at different ranges! It does also say there are differences but not what people tend to expect, 28g remember!

Choke sizes for 28 bore have less variation than 12 bore and therefore less effect.

Chokes do work, although I do agree people can get a bit too wrapped up with them, this guy just wants to know what size his are!

Cheers
