darrren 414
Alright lads. Picked up my first pup on saturday, black and tan Lakeland terrier. This is my first pup, I've had ferrets and air guns over the years but always fancied a dog. I don't know loads about dogs, but my missus dad said a terrier was ideal for the type of work I do, ferrets, rats up my sisters field, and other bits and bobs. How do you guys think of this breed? Any particular traits to be aware of? Pups 10 weeks old, docked and in for his first jab next week. Going to spend a good bit of time bonding with him, then when he's older get him out with my missus old mans dogs and hopefully he picks it up. Again, I'm new to terriers and dogs so it'll all be a learning curve. Quote Link to post
Aussie Whip 4,134
Get him used to the ferrets while young.just being around the cages etc so he gets the message their his allies not prey.It dose'nt take a terrier like that long to kill a ferret if not bonded with them. Quote Link to post
rabbit demon 302
Personally id never let a Lakeland or patterdale near my ferrets. Any iv seen have been too hard and kill any smaller animals double quick. If theirs a scrap the ferret will be dead or as good as by the time you get it broke up. Class wee terriers all the same and will be bang on for rats. Quote Link to post
terryd 8,573
It will be fine and now is the time more suspicious of me bloody lurcher I will admit i did have a lakeland that wanted to kill and fight every thing apart from a fox and was scared of the dark I am sure. A right pain Edited June 21, 2017 by terryd 3 Quote Link to post
darrren 414
Haha thanks guys. I got two cats in the house and he's alright with them, the cats gave him a good few whacks. The cats were my main concern but if he's brought up with them i don't see any problems. I'll get him introduced to the ferrets in the next few day's and get a small dish of milk down for them. What sort of age is best to start getting him out and about? As you can we im new to all this so all advice is good advice. Quote Link to post
