tomburras 2,730
I have said it before, but I think I am from the last generation to enjoy that kind of freedom, out all day and night sometimes, camping, fishing, ferreting, air rifles, we used to roam miles and miles, and apart from being shouted at by the odd farmer (who most I suspect had a sneaking regard for us) nobody bothered us, happy carefree days, I do feel sorry for young lads now, with their computer games and so on, brilliant times I will never forget. As a 90,s kid I was in the "transition" period. I never had a computer but all my mates has snezez? And n64,s? I never really fit in. My mates would invite me round to play on there computers bit after 10 mins was like - this is shit lol. So used to go off fishing the canal or the aire and my mates couldent see the fun. Iv not changed since and never had a computer (apart from my phone) my dad used to take me out and he was from the same era, we went anywhere. My first perm at 13 I was walking through a field with a rabbit and the farmer came down saying what you doing? Shooting rabbits I said. Ok carry on he said and that was my first perm! Times have changed now obviously it's different now. I respect the older generation massively and love the tales they have to tell. 3 Quote Link to post

mark williams 7,552
The era of the film is 1978 "ish"- the year I left school - 20 years after "POPS" ( Philpot) All my mates Dad`s were in the mines, my Dad was a very clever chap ( soap consultant) and top industrial chemist, he expected a lot from me. . Anyways I left school, my Dad said , " you`ve one week, then you look for an apprenticeship" and you stay away from the pits I was offered a labourers job at both the gas board and electricity board at £38/ week. I was also offered a job in the glass trades as an apprentice master glazier ( 7yr apprenticeship), making/ repairing church windows through to just site glazing, glass and plate glass cutter at £21/week inc Sat mornings. The rest is history, I took the building trades apprenticeship and in 1984 Maggie Thatcher saw to the pit closures which saw to me redundant. No work anywhere so I went on my own and never looked back,- 33years in business now. I don`t have a Bentley like Mitch but I have a better gun and a Tranny van Golf courses, canal marina and £2,000/ year barge moorings , Suave flats, housing estates, schools with great results coming from them etc, etc are all here now. Where the pits were, there are now epitaphs to the poor people that died in them,- there was a lot . How lucky I am to know all these farms all these years to walk the fields with a friendly wave from the farmers, as and when I please. atb Mark. 3 Quote Link to post
