Nik_B 3,790
They are directed by radar but still need an operative sat with them to make sure of no computer error and they always hit ... unfortunately sometimes that's a bad thing ... we had a particular day in Iraq where we were hit with rocket attacks over twenty times in one day ( I spent more time on my belly than on my feet that day lol ) one of the rockets that came over was going to miss by a mile but the phalanx hit it and took the tail off it and it came down in camp and killed 4 Norwegian soldiers .... but on balance they saved hundreds more ...... Thanks Socks Amazing technology, I have seen those videos from the Navy ships but I never in a million years though they had them covering our bases on land it just didn't occur to me that that radar would work very well in a desert as there is little ground clutter. Nik_B 3,790
See this is why I was asking what might seem odd questions a while back particularly about range of engagement, not because I am imagining what it is like but because I am trying to understand how things work and at what ranges etc, it's very hard (for a civilian) to imagine what an infantryman goes through because the videos (even the good ones) make it look like people are shooting at nothing and you can't see what they can see with their eyes. I have always been interested in how radar and surface to air missiles work for example, you really have to dig through the internet to understand how they work and what the operator is seeing and doing because it is simply never talked about in books, and films are just ridiculous. Thanks for the insight

When you think about it, that is a really clever idea I suppose it cannot be jammed/defeated (or can it?) where as optically tracked missiles can. The Germans were the first to use guided missiles in WW2 as far as I know, the Fritz-X and Henschel Hs 293 but we learned quickly how to jam their signals. That is pretty impressive technology for 75 years ago.
