Nik_B 3,790
Gulf States refusing to allow anything Qatari related to dock at their ports. This has really come out of the blue I don't think anyone would have seen this coming. http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2017-06-06/gulf-states-launch-naval-blockade-qatar Gulf States vs Qatar, Turkey and Iran?http://www.middleeasteye.net/columns/why-campaign-against-qatar-doomed-1663040860 Mate I am going to be studying this for days because I have been blindsided by it, I did know that Qatari support of the MB really pissed the Saudi's off and also that the Turks also were also supporting the MB but this possible alliance between Turkey Qatar (fine) and Iran (which probably means Iraq as well now) has been a big surprise to me, there doesn't seem to have been any indication that this was coming. What ever happens we aren't going to get involved this time, we (the West) have interests with both sides....maybe they need their own blood letting to sort things out? Good point, 8000 strong base there but they are crafty buggers and war between two groups that the US supports cannot be a bad thing for them lol I wouldn't be surprised if the US was goading both sides on, they are going to make trillions

Born Hunter 17,751
Nice accounts of the see wiz, socks. Didn't realise they were part of land based defences in the Gulf. I assume they were American? The only land based systems I thought the british military used was rapier and starstreak. Anyway, I love reading about all those naval systems and weapons. Still the ultimate in power projection!

Amateurs that neutralised 3 terrorist dogs in 8 minutes. Not bad going even if they aren't as good as the world famous irish police.

I doubt rapier or starstreak can take out a mortar or small rocket, they're not really designed for that. In a flat desert area with little ground clutter that Phalanx is ideal and a great way to test the system. It's amazing how accurate it is as well, I was always doubtful of the effectiveness of some of these wonder weapons after the first Gulf war when they found most Patriots missed their targets. Modern SAMs are highly effective but it gets me wondering why we still use such an old system like rapier, is that all we have protecting our country? I know they're planning to replace it with a more standard missile but I would thought we would have a patriot equivalent at least. I think what they did was update the radar system to a very modern one and make improvements to the seeker, since BAE are involved you can imagine they have some top notch upgrades though so maybe it's only a rapier by name? If that stuff interests you there is a free SAM Simulator (google it) you can get, it only simulates older Soviet missile and radar systems since there is no way to have access to the modern types of any nationality. It's quite different to what most people imagine the operator can see and what he is doing.

Anyway, my point was that to my knowledge those systems are the limit of the British military's land based air defences. Which is why I speculated that the Phalanx Socks was talking about was an American bit of kit. I'm pretty sure that the Aster system used by the Royal Navy is being experimented with for land operations.
