Lurcher Buying Advice

I am new member to the site and am looking for some Lurcher purchasing advice. I’ve already got a Bedlington x Greyhound. She is amazing at pretty much everything she needs to do but I would like to go one larger.

I've been unlucky so far in my search – any advice would be welcome on where to find working lurcher puppies. Been on the usual sites - preloved and pets4homes - there isn’t much choice and lots of the crosses seem very random.

In an ideal world the pup would be an Greyhound X Greyhound x Deerhound but in reality I know I have more chance with the lottery - what I need is a very rough coated largish lurcher. Am a bit of a traditionalist so don’t want anything with too much bull or saluki in it

I know it’s a bit cheeky – being new and all – but any pointers on where to find one would be greatly appreciated.

Bigger's not always better well that's what the Mrs keeps telling me anyway ?, what I would say is though with bull or more so Wheaton in the mix because you want coat your upping the chances of getting what you want which I'm guessing is more of all round lurcher with lots of drive, not nocking deerhounds they're are cracking beasts but the few iv seen and owned haven't really been worthy of breeding from barring one dog that was a beast, the bitch I had had a shit coat turned like two double decker bus's and jacked so not something I'd have again that's for sure keep looking and doing your homework on any of the litters that come up though and you will find what you want just maybe broaden your views on different crosses and go for something from parents that's doing what you want instead of just a certain breed atb?

spot on , yeh you right just go for a pup from proven workers , and regards coat it works both ways as in the winter a dog with good coat like my 2 dogs can take what ever the weather throws at them , but there fooked in the summer . i had a bitch lurcher x lurcher who was near enough 90% running dog just drop of collie her coat was just like greyhound but just bit thicker , she was ok in the winter , and when lamping no prob , a x i've always liked is pit x grey x whippet x saluki x grey you get good dog there not to big and run all day/night and bit of grit .

I got a saluki bull grey with a slash of whippet and he a very handy dog. Surprised me a few times, he quite a big dog at 30 tts and a long back on him. When he needs to he can really put the work in. Deffo a handy x

The problem I have is literally knowing where to find a decent lurcher. Is there a place on-line or somewhere else where they come up more regularly? Got lucky the first time but it feels a lot more of a gamble this time round.

Locally there are some great dogs but they have too much bull in them for me. I actually don’t mind other people’s bull crosses. They are really lovely dogs but they are not for me. It’s a personal choice as much as anything.

But I am way more flexible than I sound. I just want a rough coated lurcher that’s a bit bigger than my current dog if poss. She is a Bedlington x Greyhound and is pretty much perfect for my local conditions – she manages really rough ground, often in terrible weather for miles and miles day after day. She also passes for a long haired mutt with civilians – which I think is an underrated attribute!! something similar would

How big is your beddy x greyhound? This cross should be big enough/game enough to do everything you want.

She's 20tts. Most people that meet her think she is a Beddy Whippet and I take that as a compliment.

 

Getting a slightly bigger dog is not a criticism of her at all. She is great. But if I am getting another dog the option of something a bit bigger make sense on a couple of different levels. Am not after more speed or massive height but a well rounded dog.

Pretty small for that cross then. If the beddy x greyhound suits you then maybe go for the same, but look to find a breeding where the pups should reach about 24-26tts? Deerhound/grey x beddy grey would be a nice cross.

I'd be looking at quality from the parents rather than strict adherence to breeds or a look. It May open up a lot more litters to choose from ,we all have favorites regarding coat etc, but the quality of the parents,in the disciplines that you need may reap better results.

Just stay away from peddlers.

Why don't you put a good working rough dog over your beddy grey, if you are happy with her, maybe a rough type worker with beardie or deerhound, weaton or something in it.
