Accip74 7,112
Was round me mates place today and they were cutting a silage field out the back of his the amount of buzzards and kites I seen was mad me n him was chatting about what they catch and I said to him I've heard they kill more than you think and he said if that's true why aren't they ever used by hawking lads gotta say made me think lol Put simply, they are totally shite falconry birds. 1000s of years of falconry proves that. Yes Buzzards were used as beginners birds & yes you might catch the odd thing, maybe a few rabbits over a few seasons of perseverance, but on the whole a waste of valuable time. I have a little area behind my house that I can view all the goings on throughout the day. The same Buzzard (a very pale bird) has been hanging around this area for nearly a year, along with numerous hares & a bunch of pheasants. Fcuk knows what it's feeding on throughout the year? almost zero carrion I would of thought? Mice? Worms? The odd young bird? The odd leveret? But its here every day & the pheasants don't seem disturbed much by it.....
tilimangro 1,013
Buzzards are notorious for flopping on the grass and eating worms when used a sfalconry birds
beast 1,884
Barn owls can hover pretty well. ... Most birds can hover it is just a matter of control and ability . That the is your say how well can they do it. Watch the chaffinches sitting on a perch then they fly out grab a bug and fly back they hover for a sit second before they grab it but this is not theirain feed source so they ate not designed to do it very efficiently. Watch a bee eater or roller do the same thing and it is smooth as silk. Watch any bird landing 0n a branch and ignore hovers for the last couple of seconds
Squirrel_Basher 17,100
Any bop is only as good as the size of its feet .The buzzard has tiny feet as does the kite in comparison to say a gos or Harris of similar size .I had a buzzard for two seasons and it only ever caught mice ,was as said bad for flopping down on insects especially crane flies. They are good birds to teach the starter in respect of weight calculating as they seem to stay hungry far longer than other birds .My bird would come to a chick even when stuffed whereas the Harris would be wild on his first . Kites as commen as buzzards here now and ravens a daily sound ,even saw a pair of hen harriers quite local which was a first. Kestrels not as commen as they were ,probably a bad year for voles as the barn owls ain't apparent either . Once watched a buzzard getting towed around a field by a rabbit it had bound to but gave up ,probably a young bird . We get passage hobbys too which are insect eaters by and large, pity as they are cracking lookers .Merlins were commen here once but haven't seen one for years. Sparrowhawk numbers down too it appears .
