What a result out in Botswana. A new World Strongest Man as of today.   1st Eddie Hall (England)   2nd Thor Bjornsson (Iceland)   3rd Brian Shaw (USA)   He said he`d do it and he did.

Amen! Not all PED's are illegal. It's down to what works!   If you think that PED's aren't rife in professional sports you're seriously out of the loop! What the British public doesn't know is wh

Bill Werbenick used to take 18 pints and 2 whiskeys to steady his nerves, much more of a feat of endurance in itself than popping a pill or two.

Like you say if it's a legitimate med, under medical supervision, it's ignored. That's exactly how the Williams sisters are getting around the IOC testing.

Its not that its being ignored Chris its just the TUE system is being manipulated, without the system sport would be robbed of some great competitors because of something irrelevant to sport so it is necessary, its just like anything else once it becomes abused it needs a re - think.....the way athletes are stacking and masking synthetic drugs the testers are always one step behind ive described it to people like mixing paint where red and green paint are illegal so when mixed it creates yellow which is not illegal but that doesnt mean red and green didnt play their part !...in theory the TUE system works but its down to the governing bodies to get things right and at the moment they cant.

i remember Glen trying to get down to weight. he would sit on a chair in the corner with a thick old heavy rug over him with a fan heater shoved under. makes me smile thinking back on it. Victoria Gym it was called after his daughter. he would get free tickets to events up here in the north east and would take me and my pal with him as we were the youngsters in the gym. was great, ringside seats. we felt the bees knees at the time lol

Thats a good little story antg it makes sense as well because at that time the cruiserweight division had only just come about and the limit was 190 lb which everyone struggled with, later on it was put up to 200 lb but the mid 80's was a good time for the division in the north east i remember about 5 lads coming down to the Beckett for a few weeks sparring Glen was one, there was also Paul Lister,Sammy Reeson,Terry Davison all good fighters from that area at the time.

Glen was a nice lad but a bit of a troubled character as i remember wasnt he adopted or had a bad childhood or something I forget now,i was told he went through a bit of a mid life crisis a few years ago having loads of tattoos and getting his hair all tarted up he started chasing fanny and getting in fights that was why Sky ditched him apparently....Doug Bidwell that name brings back some memories.

he was from a nice family Gnasher. he had a brother and nephew who had severe health problems and it played on the whole family. they were very close.

there was a few that used to come in to spar. westgarth was one and Noel Quarless who were well thought of at the time i can remember coming in.

ye i remember a few years back hearing about his mid life crisis if thats what its called lol i was talking to his older brother a couple months back but he never mentioned Glen as i think they fell out.

oh ok i knew there was some family stuff that would upset him another few names i remember well Noel was a Scouser though.....i might be wrong but I think Johnny Westgarth gave Glen his first defeat....it was after that he went back down to cruiserweight.....Dave Garside was another from the north east.....it was a tough weight to be simply because you knew you wasnt going to make money as a cruiserweight even at the very top so if you wasnt quite big enough for heavyweight you had a tough choice to make......i remember hearing Glen a few years ago say his claim to fame was sparring Tyson and it annoyed me....when you,ve won a world title you dont need a claim to fame i was disappointed to hear that he was a very good fighter Glen decent power and a lot of heart....with a better organised career he could of stayed at the top a bit longer i remember laughing about his method of gaining weight which was to stuff his face with chocolate....Doug Bidwell knew his boxing but he was no trainer !!

Just edited to add another one of them i forgot who came down here for sparring Stuart Lithgo, big strong lad he was.....in more ways than one !!

ye he was a scouser but from memory i think he moved to Hartlepool for a time thats how he was in the north east. Bidwell managed him for a while. can never remember him training him, that was mostly down to him and his family .i may be wrong as it was a long time ago now lol
