trenchfoot 4,243
I like to see a bit of chub on a pup. Its called puppy fat for a good reason, they'll grow into it 3 Quote Link to post
whitefeet4190 1,725
You only get one chance to feed them, I keep weight on my pups until about 10 or 11 months but some lads want there dogs 100% fit at 6 months old for some stupid reason, but each to their own Atb 1 Quote Link to post
socks 32,253
Impossible to tell without seeing the pup and I do like a pup to carry a bit extra depending on how much training and work it's doing but a 24 inch pup of that cross at 6 months is pretty heavy at over 50 lbs ....... shaaark 10,694
Sounds ok to me. I wouldn't worry about it, he'll fine down a bit as he gets a bit older. Bitch I had a few years back, a fraction under 29" tts, was 80lb at 12 months, and ended up at 72lb fit running weight, give or take about 1lb either way Quote Link to post

BGD 6,436
I'd echo what everyone else has said really, even if he is a bit on the chubby side that's no bad thing when they're still young IMO. Get him out plenty over the next few months and just let him settle into his natural shape without worrying too much about fitness just yet. 1 Quote Link to post

Sire was 1st x collie/grey and dam was 1st x deer/grey. I know it's a different type, just saying most pups in general do fine down a bit as they get older Quote Link to post
socks 32,253
Of course all pups fine down as they get older ... but having a running dog puppy to heavy can be as detrimental as having it to skinny ...... Quote Link to post
neil cooney 10,416
If a vet says it's over weight then there's a good chance it's actually fat. I've seen pets after their check ups where the vet said they're fine when in fact they were obese. I used to be in that school of thinking that pups should be fat but I now think that over weight pups are as bad as under weight pups. I'm not talking about malnourished but I do like to see well fed very active pups look just right and not fat from when they leave the bitch 'till adult hood. It definitely has to help their wind later in life. Think about it, how many fat kids go on to be successful athletes ? Quote Link to post
shaaark 10,694
I know pups fine down as they get older, I just said that. And I know what your saying, but she wasn't too heavy, and at 25.5kg, or 56.1lb at 24.5" at 6 months, I don't think DanielG's pup is too heavy either. But again like you say, it's impossible to say without seeing the pup. Just the way some pups are, some are heavier than others, even from the same litter and sex, especially regarding lurchers and crossbreeds. His pup has got probably another 2-3 inches to go yet, and will 'probably' level out around the 65lb mark I would imagine. 2 Quote Link to post
neil cooney 10,416
Let me put it another way. Think of the breeds and types around the world where wind / stamina is a big priority in them being successful canine athletes. Pit bulls, sled dogs, herding dogs, hounds and salukis. Now think about the rearing a lot of these dogs get in their native homelands. I'm not talking about malnourished runts because at the end of the day they wouldn't make adulthood. Nor am I talking about neglect or rearing a dozen so one or two reach adulthood. I personally rear pups to be healthy and socialized but definitely don't shove the grub into them like I used too. Back to the OPs post, if the pup is a first cross wheaten / greyhound then they can often come cloody and that must be taken into account. Quote Link to post
