Handsome Plummer Trophy To Be Won At Shanes Castle

Recommended Posts

We are pleased to announce that as part of the 30th Annual All Ireland Terrier, Whippet and Lurcher Championships there will be a special trophy to be won outright by the winner of the Plummer Terrier class at the Irish Game Fair at Shanes Castle on the 25th June. This is sponsored by Paul Pringle in memory of his friend Brian Plummer.

TOP PLUMMER TERRIER AWARD FOR SHANES CASTLE GAME FAIR 2017

Irish Country Sports & Country Life Editor, Paul Pringle writes with news of a superb new trophy which he will present to the TOP PLUMMER TERRIER at the All Ireland Championship at Shanes Castle this June:

‘Many years ago, the late Brian Plummer and I were good friends and indeed it was Brian who traveled from the far north of Scotland to stand as my Best Man at Gretna Green.

We had been drawn together though the world of countrysports, writing and a love of working dogs, and of course he had written a series of articles for Irish Country Sports & Country Life magazine.

My primary interest lay in gundogs, while Brian’s was lurchers and terriers, of which he had many, along with numerous breeding projects and programmes, about which he wrote countless books, most of which adorn my bookshelves.

That was where the similarity ended. My scribblings were never destined for books, I was only an amateur gundog trainer, never a dog breeder and, unlike Brian, I was not one for controversy, something that seemed to draw him like a moth to a flame.

He had views, strong ones, and seldom if ever shied away from stating them. I think it fair to say there were two different schools of opinion on Brian and his dogs and writings, and both groups held robustly to their positions — much like the man himself. I also think it fair to say that many who decried his arguments had never hunted with the man, or seen his dogs in action. I had that privilege many times in Scotland, and ran a couple of his Lucas terriers and a lurcher bred down form Blue, one of his earlier dogs.

Something he will be much remembered for (amongst many things) is the creation of a very special dog which bears his name, the Plummer Terrier. This was no ‘Kennel Club’ creation, but the end product of a very selective breeding programme undertaken meticulously by Brian to produce a terrier with specific attributes.

The Plummer Terrier filled a niche slot in the working terrier world and was adopted by enthusiastic supporters of the dog, with resulting progeny to be seen today throughout the UK and farther afield.

I have long thought that it would be fitting for me to honour Brain and for me to acknowledge our friendship in some way. Last year, Albert Titterington put up a prize for the Plummer Class and I thought that I would like to do similar for 2017.

I have the honour of presenting a fine cold cast bronze of a terrier (unfortunately not of a Plummer Terrier as I was unable to source one at this time) to the winner of the Plummer Class at 30th All Ireland Terrier Championships at Shanes Castle Game Fair which is on 24/25 June 2017.

The award is to be kept by the winner and therefore this is a once in a lifetime opportunity for an enthusiast to carry off this particular trophy and I hope to see as many Plummers as possible along for the event.’

Well let's hope some thought has gone into picking the judge if you've gone to all the trouble to get the classes and trophy. It's a great tribute to the man and the breed he created!

Gunnar,

The Pummer classes will be Plummer Terrier D or B Plummer Terrier since Paul put up the trophy we have added Puppy D or B.

They will be judged by the overall terrier judge. Jed Donagh is running a lot more Plummer classes at his show.

The Tally Ho Dog Show and Raceday Saturday 3rd May 2025
As 7am on Saturday morning 3rd May 2025 rang out loud and clear in our house, I crawled out of bed and thanked god for allowing me another day on this beautiful landscape of ours called the Emerald Isle. With the joys of spring in my heart, Mr Fox away on his summer holidays, the work in the field completed for another season, it was show time again on this side of our Island.
Suddenly the seasons were telling me it was Tally Ho show time of the year again and time to get our Canine friends in the show ring and on the race course, for the start of the summer Dog show and Race Days schedule.
Some of us have had joyous occasions in our families since the last showing season, and some of us may have had great sadness, as fate can throw all sorts of problems in the pathway of life. As we dusted ourselves down after our winter woes, Saturday was a day to leave all our cares of yesterday behind and head to Crumlin for  the Tally Ho  annual dog show and race day.  And what a days enjoyment with our loyal Canine friends that was.
The weather was beautiful, but tinged with an east wind that would cut you in two. As we approached the field, we could see very clearly there was very little parking space left. Each year this show grows bigger and better. Peter Morgan being the caring gentleman he is made sure he kept a parking space for the now 2 senior citizens and of which we were very grateful.
By midday the field was full to capacity.  In the show rings there was a big turnout and a great mix of top quality dogs in all categories. 22 races and 28 children in child handling class.
As I moved around the rings, I met up with some old friends and some new ones too. Michael Reilly travelled up all the way from Tipperary. Yapper Hayes came up from Kilkenny and Stephanie O Connor and family and Mc Grath Family travelled up from Carlow.  All great doggie people and support every show and race day North and South of the border.
Stands were situated around the show ground. Paul Boyd with loads of canine supplies/ Alannah Harpur and her sister with some beautiful Tea Shirts and Mugs and Mary Kate Quinn was there with her amazing art work . What an interesting and talented lady to speak to. There was a burger stand on site and 4 toilets dotted all around the field.
Our children as usual were well cared for by the Tally Ho show organiser Peter Morgan, both in the ring and outside it. Two bouncy castles were on site and inside the ring were trophys, medals and big bags of sweets for every child. A real childrens paradise. Some sleepy we people on Saturday night.
Time waits for nobody. The moment had arrived after the long cold winter to get our Canine friends out of the field and into the show ring and on the Race course.

And Finally, Finally, I always leave the best to last. I must not forget the man at the helm of this top show day. Peter Morgan your hospitality, excellent show and race day, magnificent trophies and prizes, your generosity  knows no bounds. I can honestly say our lives have been enriched with the excellent work and enjoyment you give to many families North and South of the border through your dog show on the day.
Peter we all look forward to your shows as they brighten up our darkest days and brings us away from the trials and tribulations of life, if only for a day. Your show is a credit to you for a one man band, along with all the time and energy you put into them to give us all a great days enjoyment.
Thank you for your friendship over the years and please do not stop running your shows. Yours in Country Sports to we meet again, God Bless.
