I was about to post some pictures of an old air rifle I was given yesterday and noticed there is a dedicated Tatty Old Air Rifle section!

I think it's a generic rifle made by the Midland Gun Co but it's badged as a T Wild. I was going to just repair the splits in the stock but it came apart far easier than any rifle I've stripped before so kept digging deeper.

I may be wrong but I guess it has to be 70 or years old. I was impressed by the built-in spring-guides. The one inside the piston also doubles as the trigger tang.A very neat piece of simple but effective engineering

Despite the spring turning-out to have a definate kink and the outer washer being torn it fired well enough to put a dent in a bit of wood. The leather for a new washer is soaking as I type and I have a straighter spring salvaged from a scrapped Chinese rifle that looks like a reasonable match for the original. Interesting that the so-called "Powerful" Chinese underlever used a spring of similar dimensions to a workaday veteran of the 1930s!

The older one in bits looks like my Diana mod27Export, Mine has no markings, I was told they were acid etched which invariably wears off!!

 

Mine even has the cracks in the same spot on the stock!, Mine was 'converted to O ring on the piston head and resprung with an ox spring by a so called 'Gunsmith' it was shooting extremely low pwered, Something like 2ft lbs as the O ring was the wrong size! I put my finger over the transfer port and pushed the piston down the cylinder with a large screwdriver, There was absolutely no resistance!, A 20mm x 2mm O ring had been fitted, I fitted a 20mmx2.5 or 3mm (Can't remember exactly!) but the piston wouldn't travel down the cylinder with the TP covered!, It rose to a little over 6ft lbs straight away but is losing compression now through the breech seal!!

 

This is the gun, Everything was larupped in grease too

I actually bought some 1" leather parachute seals to put the piston seal back to how it should be, Not got round to it yet!!

 

I bought the nickel plated Gem from the melbourne vintage gun fayre a few weeks ago, It's lovely from this side, No so at the other side though!, It wouldn't push a pellet out of the barrel at first as the leather seal was dry as a nuns wotsit, A few drops of oil through the transfer port saved opening it up anbd it shoots quite well now for such and old thing!!

This is my 177 Relum ZII, bought new by myself aged 16 in 1962. Archers in Slough were selling these in the sports department for £7, yes seven pounds. I wanted the .22 barrelled version, but they had sold out and the salesgirl had no idea when more would follow. I shot many a rat with this rifle. It lived under my bed for 25 years, before getting a new spring and a PTFE compression washer. It is still very accurate and tested at over 11 lbs. Good in barns for pigeons.

this was a Christmas present from jimmy aka Big Mac of here and it stunning and good company for my two 97's

put the serial number in the Weihrauch date gizmo and it came back as 1977 so its 4 years younger than me

A modern take on an old classic! I was given this old Mk5 BSA Super Meteor by a mate, he has owned it since about 1983 when he was a teenager. It has been in his cupboard ever since. He bought it second hand, so I am guessing at about 1980 year of manufacture.

It was in good nick, apart from a snapped stock, which has been solidly repaired but meant that I could not give it a natural finish, hence the camo paint job. I stripped it down and bought an ultra-tune kit from Chambers, it also needed a new cocking arm, and the barrel had side to side movement.

After a few hours of sanding and cleaning, it was re-greased, new spring, guide and top-hat. Replaced the seals and reassembled.   

Nice and solid now, and smooth. I know the purists won’t like the finish, but did not want spend any more on a new stock.

I picked up this old .177 HW77 at the  RFD a couple of days ago.

Paul at the shop told me that at some point 'it had been owned by one of those mob from Vermin Hunters TV'.

He had it advertised as a 'Sandwell 77'.

I must admit I was a bit dubious because the edge of the sticker looked like it had been picked at.

 

It was very smooth and quiet to cock and, the shot cycle is quick but easily manageable.

 

It's a little scruffy all round but, nothing that can't be sorted.

The open sights are missing - I'd like to get those back on there eventually.

The safety was jammed and not working.

 

I gave Sandwell Fieldsports a quick call - from what they said, it was looking like this had had a stage 2 tune at some point.

 

The block is stamped 'Made in W. Germany'

....... It turns out that it was manufactured in 1986.

 

Yesterday I took the stock off, dropped the trigger out and cleaned up the safety - it now works perfectly.

I gave all of the external metalwork a good rub over with Ballistol. It still shows it's age but, looks a lot better.

 

I also put a little Hawke Vantage and a 1pc mount on it and, fitted a sling.

 

I took a couple of hours off this morning to rezero it at Black Cat.

 

While I was there, Davy confirmed that it used to be his and, it had indeed had a stage 2 tune a couple of years ago.

Lovely bit of kit.  And if Tony has done his magic on it you've picked up a great rifle. I will bet the trigger is sooo sweet, mine are.

Jon was the anti tamper sticker broken by you taking the trigger housing off or was it already broken please ?

                                 I wouldn`t sell or swap this lady for all the tea in China, why did you all let go of her ?

You're definitely giving it the use it deserves Mark

 

I moved it on because I had a lot of airguns and, I had the chance of a BSA Mercury Challenger.

 ......... As good as the 77 is, it didn't stand a chance against nostalgia.

 

The seal was already broken when I got it - I think Davy had been having a nosey at Tony's handywork (?)

 .......... The trigger and safety come out by removing 2 pins right at the back of the cylinder (above the trigger block) - that seal is only effected if you unscrew the back block (hope that makes sense).

 

At the moment, I'm back to buggering about with my TX - discounting the weight, which I regard as a bit of a placebo, I'll be a happy man if I can get it somewhere like that 77

Jozef it shoots ok

she has a bit of a kick mind and it takes some getting used to

a bit harder than most springers to master but she is stunning
