beast 1,884
I will try to keep this brief but would welcome some input here. In 30 years of owning hunting dogs I have never bred a litter. I have had sone good dogs some rubbish but I have a bitch here which I really think is top class she has done EVERYTHING I have asked of her and even now at 5 years old is still surprising me. She is line bred collie grey with a splash of beardie has done a bit with ferrets an on the lamp but is mostly used as a mooching daytime hunting cur and in this role I have not seen many better dogs. Best bird catcher I have ever seen. All quarry. I would love to put her to a first cross collie grey but my worry has always been what would happen to pups if I ever bred a litter and that is why I never have done. So I wonder if there would be any interest from any members if I did decide to breed or if I am going to end up stick with a bunch of pups here. I dont want to produce more lurchers for the merry go round but if half a dozen decent lads or lasses are interested then i will see about a mating. What do you reckon? 2 Quote Link to post

bob84 189
If you where in Ireland id defiantly have one spent two year looking for a collie hound or you could keep a dog and bitch cull the rest and not have the worry about who'd be getting them . Quote Link to post
Bobtheferret 1,248
I am sure if you advertise on here you would find good working homes for the pups, it's a cross i for one have always been interested in, depending on when you decided to have the litter. Good to see someone so concerned about the puppies rather than just breed for the sake of it. Quote Link to post
straight2hand 303
how tall would you imagine these dogs would make in theory? Glad to see a thoughtful breeder. ATBS2H Quote Link to post

jeemes 4,480
Whatever you do you cannot guarantee finding good homes for puppies. People who get the best out of breeding there own are doing so for entirely selfish reasons..to have made all the decisions regarding the mating, including the choice of stud and then doing the best for the bitch in and after whelping. I always cut litters down anyway which takes a lot less out of the bitch and gives more to whats left. The only reason to put a bitch through rearing a large litter is money or sentimentality, and if you suffer from that you shouldnt breed dogs. The breeder then gets the choice of pups,I always keep back two and never let them go under three months.I dont know why people bang on about the part of the litter that is surplus. You should concern yourself about what you are keeping rather than that which you dont want. Lurchers are very difficult to sell anyway but the only way you will guarantee them 100% not having a bad life outside of your kennel is to either keep the lot or cull all that you do not want, otherwise there is risk that they wont have a great life. If I were you I would always breed my own but take with a pinch of salt folks who are mad keen now for a pup because chances are most will change there mind. 5 Quote Link to post

jeemes 4,480
I thought passports were needed for south. You definitely need one from southern Ireland to England. Some will drive into north first to save passport. Quote Link to post

THE STIFFMEISTER 15,798
Is she hunting how you want? Is the huntung you do the type you want to carry on doing? Is she the type of dog you want to keep in future? If yes to all of those, instead of trawling around, keep to what you know and breed tight, good luck There are few better things to knock about with than a nice tight bred collie type 1 Quote Link to post
bob84 189
Could you keep this updated if u do decide too. Quote Link to post
troyboy17 631
There are enough members on here that would want a genuine collie cross from working stock without going to hancock probably people would have more collie crosses if they were available without going to him me for one Quote Link to post
