Neobliviscaris1776 1,998
Hi Fellas, Was planning to get a rod this summer and try my hand at some mackerel. Not fished before so not sure what set up is needed. Any rod/reel recommendations or advice would be appreciated. The homestore called the range has some pretty cheap rods...anyone seen them at all? Any good? Regards Neobliviscaris Quote Link to post

Fat-Ferret 857
You won't need anything too fancy for a bit of mackerel fishing Quote Link to post

Arry 23,449
If you want to float fish or use spinners then a 9 to 10 foot spinning rod 10 to 60 gm casting weight (could also be used for spinning for Bass) with spinning reel,. If you want to use Mackerel feathers then a fixed spool beach caster 4 to 6 oz casting with a large fixed spool reel loaded with 18 lb line and shock leader say 45 lb or 50 lb. Good luck. Cheers Arry Quote Link to post
Flipper_Al 1,012
Off the beach i use my 4.5lb TC spod rod with 20lb braid, and a 50lb braided shock leader 2 Quote Link to post

terryd 8,780
yes like ollie said they are good value. I picked up an old Odessa bass rod for 30 quid off ebay. Its still my favourite now. 2-4oz so just right for what I need which is lobbing a big old clam out. Never tried mackerel fishing but I intend to this year. You don't need to spend a fortune but personal I hate a floppy rod lol 6 Quote Link to post
South hams hunter 8,938
For mackerel any rod and reel will do. It depends more on where and how Quote Link to post
mattyg 1,862
Get in NEWKID's ear, he will put you on the money where tackle and location is concerned! Matt Quote Link to post
terryd 8,780
or better still get one the back of his kayak Quote Link to post
ollieollie 766
Get yourself a copy of the river cottage handbook of fishing, its not written by Hugh fearnly do da, but one of his fishing mates who knows his stuff. Its a good reference book and its not a tackle tarts view on fishing either! Quote Link to post
