minion 29
What do you expect from you dog? I dont expect field trial standards but do expect a dog to sit, wait, lie, and come straight back when called. Now the first three are easy the last can be tricky depending on the dog. Retrieving is nice, as is hand signals but I can live without them. So what do you expect and what do you have. Be honest, how well tained are your dogs? Do they ever "do their own thing"or are the so wll trained that they always 100% under control? Should be intresting thread if everyone is honest. Lets hope eveyone takes part. cheers minion Quote Link to post
Paid 935
What I would like, and what I get, are two very different things I would like 100% recall 100% placement (stay there type thing) Less jumping up at people, when saying hello A perfect retrive at all times Id also like my dog to go where I direct, with a wave of an arm The dog to mouth the netted rabbts less, and not try to air hump them What I get, is % recall No placement if I take my eyes off him Far to many friends with paw marks on the front of their clothes a retrive I'm very happy with and a dog that goes where the feck it wants A dog that loves to chew a netted rabbit, and air humps them strangely oftern But he suits me just fine, and I woulnt have wanted another, as my first lurcher. maty j 6
well my dog does her own thing very often but find it can be a help some times. her recall is most of the time fine, when theres stuff to chase or fresh scent i get the 2 fingered salute. saying that she is getting quite handy when out with the air rifle and learning well not to storm in till the gun goes off. id like her to be less like a woman some times too she has her tantrums and moments! her retreive of game is shocking, picking and choosing what she does but balls dummys is pritty allright. she follows hand signals well, i can leave her sat and stayed...not for long unless i watch her all the time making sure she doesnt move. she can change direction on hand signals allmost all the time and i can tell her to go the other way if the path forks. allso getting her the other side of the bush is handy but she doesnt stay there long, tends to just run circils round it but im working on it would like her too jump up people less but cant win em all Quote Link to post

The day went well two Labs and a Spaniel walking at heel, picking anything that fell or ran till after second to last drive going through some grass a hare got up right in front of this Labs nose needledsto say it hadnt seen a Hare before and fecked off after it my two mutts just sat there As I ATTEMPTED TO GET THIS THING BACK. Ican see the funny side now but at the time all i could think of was how much this thing was worth and how would i tell me mate Id lost his £500 a pop cash converter was last seen chasing a hare in the next county, As For what I expect the dogs to listen to what there told but i try to understand why sometimes they wont. Some of them I can relax with others I cant My FT bitch last year was the best out and out Game finder you can get but far too hot to trial but I tried ..shoot days near as perfect in trial situation not Just got to wound up with no off switch .This years two a lot more calmer and both have an off switch but they dont light me up like Miss. allgame 0
should come when called , jump on and off ute when i say, dont pull on lead ethier that or it can heel ethier ones fine, should sit and stay but not overly woried, a retrive is nice but im not to worried as long as it just stays were it is, and shouldnt bark and shouldnt annoy me what so ever Quote Link to post
Guest Frank
As long as my runner fills the pot and comes back at the right time when asked, that'll do me. Quote Link to post
Paul in North Lincs 15
my lurchers recall is god day and night...she dosn't hunt up ater a miss...........she will walk to heal of the lead... Jumping needs more work...................as does retrieving As someone else mentioned, my pet hate is that as soon as she sees antoher human shes acrross to the jumping up like a crazed springbok..trying to get into their pockets.....I find this traite quite embarrasing!!!! In reality I dont think I'll get alot more out of her..but shes a good lamping dog...and catches superbly for a young un My expectations are not that high................and I am happy with how shes turning out. lurcherchavvy 3
my dogs recall used to be spot on but lately has been coming short, he will come back then about 10 foot in front of me hill will stop and stare at me and wait for me to go to him he doesnt retreive and sometimes i have to walk a mile to get the bunny he has caught but he sits and stays and is good on all the other areas and he does not like other dogs from time to time especially little irratating terriers he picks them up and gives them a shake but he leaves them alone when i tell him to even if he is getting bit Quote Link to post
Guest SJM
Recall is definately the most important aspect of a dogs training Quote Link to post

breeze 1,311
Retrieving has to be high up on my must have list for what a lurcher should be able to do (Especially a lamping dog). I'm not talking about sit up and present gundog sort of retrieve... a couple of step's away will do Good recall.... This will also help with the retrieving side of thing's Jumping.... My present bitch will jump but more often than not will find a way thru the hedge at side of gate's. Hightest expected to clear around here is stock fencing (What's that 3 1/2 - 4 ft ) Down & Stay..... Ive been able to crack this with the present bitch and the older one with an hand signal close up and at distance And in general a well mannered dog while about the house...... I don't ask for much ...LOL Quote Link to post
kvnmcwebn 0
I dont have a running dog only a couple terriers so maybe it doesnt count here. Anyway if a dog has a lot of common sense i value that as much as obediance, cause if it has common sense it doesnt need to be as obediant. That being said I like a dog that doesnt go to wide in the field. Edited December 17, 2007 by kvnmcwebn Quote Link to post
porkypowell 2
k9wpg I enjoyed them vids I love spaniels they make the ultimate ferreting dogs. I have a black and white sprocker who is sat by the fire 16years old deaf and blind in one eye a once in a lifetime dog. Obedience sorts the men out from the boys. I expect and get ultimate control over dogs I work. I work towards the following commands 1,dogs name=instant recall (backed up with whistle) 2,behind= walk at heal of lead, stand at heal 3,Down= lay and stay until told otherwise 4,No= stop whatever its doing 5,go on then=retrieve, push into cover, jump, hold netted rabbit etc. That's it nothing flash no circus tricks. I use hand signals with down, behind & go on then when ferreting for obvious reasons. Retreival is always to hand I hate dogs that stand off at the end of the retrieve or worse still circel around you. This all takes time and I am constantly ironing out little flaws. I am currently working on a sprollie (2yrs) she`s almost there and helping my son whith his whippetxbeddy. This is the first beddy lurcher I have trained always had collie x`s I think its going to be an interesting exercise. Simon Quote Link to post
