White-Tailed Eagle

Recommended Posts

While I was going round my lambing fields this morning I noticed a bird of prey sat on top of the hedge, I never thought much of it because they don't give me any hassle apart from taking the after births but I'm fine with that, it wasn't until it took flight that it really caught my eye. It was huge, a lot bigger than the BOP that I usually see, half of its wings were black with what I thought looked a lighter colour on the tail end. I googled it and the white-tailed eagle seemed to be the closest thing to what I saw, I read they had been seen near Silloth a few years ago, I'm right in the Lake District, could it be a eagle? Does anyone know much about them? It said on google that they are pretty rare.

saw them on the telly the other day, bigger than a golden eagle and making a comeback, thing is with birds they don't always stay were they are put and travelling in a straight line covers a lot of miles quickly, we had a bearded vulture near me for about a fortnight last year, and the genaneral view was he had come from a project in Europe, you might also get some clues by looking on bird watching sites they can't wait to shout everytime they find something out of the ordinary, but I would advise you not to put the location on any of them if you don't want hundreds of them in your field

I wouldn't put the exact location anywhere. I'm more worried about the bird than the people lol. By the size of it, it could pick up a 2 week old lamb and fly of with it. I had read they had reintroduced them on the Isle of Mull and were trying the same in Cumbria to boost tourism.

Been releasing them up here for years. Sat tracked birds released on the east coast turn up the following day on the west coast so it could easily be a bird released from up here.., although they will have pretty obvious wing tags. Seen them on Mull before, stunning birds.

What would a wing tag look like?

Big ole birds that's for sure! I've watched them in north of Scotland hunting reds. Goldies look small compared to them!

Watched a pair of golden eagles 'mobbing' a sea eagle on Mull a few years back. The sea eagle looked way bigger. Got some cracking photos of them but lost them when my hard drive crashed before I could get it backed up..., still pisses me off to this day ?
