Uk View On American Hunting

cracking country is N.Z,,as is oz,,,,spent 10 days touring round the north island in a camper ,,,beautifull country,,,very relaxed about hunting from speaking to guys in the gun shops,,,anybody could hunt government land,,,,and a rod licence for fishing was all you needed to fish anywhere,,,if my memory is right...

28 years old born,,,and no woman,,from now till 35 your in your prime,,,go and see the world now,,,

That's the thing, I'm not really a traveller, got no great compulsion to 'see the world' like a lot of folks. NZ just looks such a fantastic place to live though, as you say. A beautiful wild country, with huge national parks to hunt all sorts of stuff, culturally quite similar to Britain, drive on the left, much more freedom to do what you want and arguably the best part their population is 5% that of the UK. 5%!!!!!!!

The downside is that their industry is largely based around agriculture and tourism, especially on the south island. I'm 7-8 years into a technical career in the oil industry and I don't really feel like I have many transferable skills if I'm honest. I was supposed to be doing some work in Oz a year back and I was going to use the opportunity to check out NZ but it never materialised. I still work with the Ozzies, but that's not NZ. LOL

There's other stuff but I don't want to completely ruin Wolfdogs thread.

Start your own thread & we will help sort your life out! Haha.....

There are a few good things you can't do,like run deer.

But then it is a BIG country with decent private property rights...

I take it you mean with dogs ? yeah that's a state thing. completely legal to do in my state for a certain amount of time. folks used to do it all the time. Rabbit dogs are still extremal popular , then you also have hog dogs, squirrel dogs coon hounds, and the coyote dogs to a lesser extent

Ah,I thought it was illegal pretty much everywhere over there.

Good to hear it's still legal in some states, nothing imo compares to a lurcher running a deer across open land.

yeah state laws can lead to so screw ups when you start state hopping ! as far as deer dogs, most pople who do it are in brush country and its driven style hunt more than anything . I guess you could compare it to how they drive hogs in Germany. but that being said if you just wanna let your dog run a deer or two in a cow field ,most people wont bat an eye at that. for most its just another dog chasing a deer. I can't sleep some mornings because my dogs are out running a deer and barking their heads off .

I got the impression it was frowned upon at least,if I could run deer with sighthounds I don't think I'd do much else.

Thinking about it,your hunting over there sounds a bit more informal,a lot of the hunting over here is very ritualised, that's I think why it gets called fieldsports.

In coursing there should be law given to the hare, the mounted packs are popular with their fancy dress and it was the same with greyhound coursing, shooters often dress like Sherlock Holmes, air gunners won't touch a rifle without their Ghillie suits and Rambo knives to hand etc

I was 32 when I cashed it in, and emigrated. I'm married with three kids, they were just little'ns at the time. Jumped with both feet and never looked back. Wish I'd done it at 22 but I'm glad I got around to it.

I will one day head to USA and I am extremely keen to see some running dogs on deer, coyote, jack rabbits and whatever else that can be run. I also would love to spend some quality time in some of your fine pistol and rifle ranges. I would need to spend a year minimum over there for any chance to do all the things I want to do. I am green with envy of your gun and hunting laws and I can't wait to get over there one day. Happy hunting wolfdog and this is a cool thread.

If you ever find your way over to the south west, and the lure of Las Vegas wears off, I'm a couple of hours north. Just holler!

Bring your Akubra though... gets a little sunny in the summer months! ;)
