Me, Chester and Snoopdog had a day out with the keeper today who very kindly allowed us to flush and retrieve the shot hares. It was rather chilly on the tops of the hills, some 2500 feet above sea level, the ground was actually pretty hard in places and the wind very cold, but once we got down into the valleys it was warmer and softer. We got a few shots and the dogs worked well, allthough the hares were a bit spookier than last time and we had to work hard to get the shots we did.

 

Here are some of Chesters pics from the day, Ive picked out the best shots, more to follow in a while when Ive uploaded the video footage and gone through that.

 

It was England V Scotland today and Chester won by a nose I was very generous today and gave them both an equal chance by leaving my bitch at home Shes also bang in season and I didnt want my prize sheepherding collie getting mated by the slippery snakehead or the mad munchie

Chester got 4 and a rabbit, but couldnt find the 4th, we only count what ends up in the bag so he had 3 hares and Snoopdog got 2 hares and a rabbit. We just werent getting the lucky breaks today, hopefully next time!

How difficult would you say the mountian hare is to catch? Compared to the Brown hare and rabbit? All on their own land?

 

 

Alos, just out of curiousity, have you ever seen a h=hwippet working nountian hare? If not how do you think they would be?

On thick heather on a damp, windy day, with a dog that hunts the hares have got no chance.

 

If you have your dog on a slip and run them when they get up, on short heather or grass, the hare has a bit more of a chance.

 

Ive seen a few rabbits take the piss out of a dog on the heather, they seem to be able to jink faster and get into their stride more quickly than the hares so in deep heather, I would rank the whitey lower than the rabbit. Sometimes when they are disturbed out of that thick stuff they run like crap for the first few strides, this is where an experienced dog will nab them.

 

They were running well today though proper took the mickey out of us the poor keeper was struggling to get shots in

 

I wouldnt even take a whippet onto the moors, I think you need a bit of strength for the rough bits, as well as a bit of height.

that is surely some beautiful country and smooth. ah the envy. what exactly is heather and why does it affect the dogs?

Heather is a plant which grows in upland areas of the Uk, mainly Scotland. It is the main habitat of birds such as grouse and mammals such as mountain hares. Its the dark brownish/burghundy patches in the photos. The gamekeepers burn it in the spring which is why its in odd shaped strips. If you do a google search for grouse moor/heather it will give you more detailed info

thank for another good day out sjm. think i have frostbite of the foot. and my kids spat the dummie .but had a good day out apart from the dog playing up

we had a good day but it was hard work .bloody cold on the top i am still freezing

i hang my head in shame to all my english comrades .... ........iam going to be a true english man and make some excsues ... next time we go out iam walking with chester he seems attracts the whities i was walking with sarah and they didnt seem to be attracted to her ........chester was trying to tell us that there were hares round him but we couldnt tell what he was saying he was to far away ....... .....hopefully get out again over xmas and kick the jocks arses .... and i will be flying the england flag with pride ..... but untill then welldone the jocks ..... some people might think iam mad doing a 300 mile round trip for a few runs ..but i had a great day with good company and stunning secnery and would do it again for the same amount of runs ........
