Daystate/airtech Regal .177 Comes Up Superb With Jsb Heavies!

Recommended Posts

Gentlemen all. Greetings.

After what has been an airgunner's oddysey with trying to get my Daystate Regal performing as a rifle should ( new Airtech regulator, cropped barrel and all) I found the next problem to solve was a puzzling lack of hard-hitting performance from the rifle's preferred 8.4 grain AA field. These penetrate well enough but are lightweight - in the hunting field there was no real hard hitting knock-down performance from the rifle which now chronos out at a healthy 11.5 FPE with the Airtech regulator I had Carl there make and fitted for it last year. Unless you are hitting straight into the brain area of a rabbit or whatever vermin itself, I was still seeing a proportion of wounded quarry getting away into undergrowth. I found these pellets are beautifully accurate alright, but, seem to lack whack!

But, after a bit of consultation with Jimmy/Bigmac97k after reading of his delight with his Daystate Merlyn and JSB Heavies ( and a bit of a study of how pellet energy works -basically, the heavier it is the more energy it delivers) and a lot of frustration with ammo experiments and tests that were mostly abysmally poor, not to mention expensive, I know of a great ebay store that sells JSB EXACT HEAVY DIABOLO 10.34 grain pellets in just the 4.51mm headsize my Regal likes. The red and white tin arrived yesterday and I went straight out on the garden range to see what these are like. The fact that these look a little more of a bullet than a traditional skirted Diabolo pellet and seated nicely into the magazine was a promising start....

My scope on this rifle is a much loved and trusted Bushnell Scopechief 4-14x50 AO from the 1990s with a lovely 30/30 duplex reticle. Simple, to the point and produces a superbly precise, accurate zero! In no time I had a zeroed group down to a single pellet hole in a plywood board at 35 Metres range with the first ten shots of the magazine!. There is nothing that builds your confidence more than seeing every one of your shots smack hard and fast, into a tight, single hole group at a proper range distance.

So, with a lovely sunny evening approaching it was out to the rabbit fields and woods....

First shot, the pellet took a rabbit through the head at nearly 50 metres and a quick recycle of the bolt hit a second rabbit that popped out of the wood at about 40. Two shots two decent, humane kills. After about a half hour wait a third came out of a hole in the ground in the field away to my right about 30 metres away. The JSB smacked it straight over through the left side of its head

This was the first time this year I have been able to get out to the fields for a decent days' shooting and the Daystate Airtech Regal and these Heavies are proving a perfect match. The evening's shoot produced a total of 6 healthy, good sized rabbits (no Kitts seen here yet though, strangely enough) and a woodpigeon, headshot out of a tree at about 35 metres range, before the light finally fell to darkness at about 8:20 pm here.

It is an understatement to say how bloody amazed and delighted I am with these pellets and how this rifle has now worked out with them. It's taken about three years and not an inconsiderate outlay of cash to get this rifle to perform as awell as it should.

So this rifle is firmly going to be a keeper. It is now, a powerful, incredibly accurate hunting arm and will be my hunting rifle if, God forbid, my onward oldening years of ageing make it difficult to carry one of my beloved spring rifles for prolonged lengths of time.

Confidence in your hunting kit is as important a factor as anything else there is.

Thanks for reading gentlemen.

Good Post Simon , enjoyed it very much, also glad you are out and about without brushes in hand and finally all is starting to come together with the Daystate Regal. Shame it was not that way to begin with.

All the very best to you and I think it is your lovely wife "Helen"

I put a few of the lads from this forum on to these pellets , always been a very good pellet in most make of guns and give the highest readings as well . I used them all the time until i tried AA express 7.9 gr and i just love these pellets

Like you said ,having Confidence in your set up sure helps big time .

Nice shooting Simon but don't expect anything else from you
