villaman 9,983
Went out shooting early evening and as i climbed over the gate ,i spotted about 1/2 dozen rabbits at 75 yards away , I thought to myself ,which i had a fac to take them out . So walked up to the top of the field and found a nice spot on the hedgerow. As i was knelling and waiting for rabbits to come out ,i found myself thinking about fac and the forms i have sent off , with that a rabbit popped out at 30 yards , had that then one at 53 yards and the last one at 41 yards . As i walked back to the van with three rabbits in the bag thinking fac again , i wondered whether it will take the enjoyment of shooting away as it will all come to easy ... I proved tonight with a bit of fieldcraft and shooting at acceptable airgun ranges with a sub 12 ft/lbs and enjoyed being out with HW100k , IMO there will always be room for sub 12 airgun in the hunting field for me , that's for sure 5 Quote Link to post
Jonjon79 13,358
I'm out of likes mate but, I know exactly where you're coming from It would be nice to have the power to take them when you first spot them but, taking them with fieldcraft and patience is so satisfying ............. What to do, what to do Atb either way mate 2 Quote Link to post
philpot 4,989
I comp!etely agree Mitch however the sport or field Craft is not replaced by power, it is simply an alternative just the same as using live ammo rifles or shotguns. All have a place in the sport of shooting and all will give pleasure of use. As an example, one area on my perm containing rabbits has no hedges, gullies or tree line so unless you want to crawl at least 150mts or get there in daylight a lay for hours and hours, you will not get a shot with 12fpe rifle. The FAC offers an alternative, it is that simple. Horses for courses Phil 5 Quote Link to post

just-A-snap 1,269
If one is able of having FAC option then why not, it does not mean that it has to be used. Did not read philpot's post last night but as with David's view and comment spot on.All the very best to you all Edited April 5, 2017 by just-A-snap 1 Quote Link to post
Rez 4,961
Id have an FAC if I could though Just for that extra coincidence maybe. Id still stick to my usual ranges too. Just to know I have that extra whack when needed. 2 Quote Link to post
pianoman 3,587
Hi Mitch. As I'v said times before, on the subjest of FAC air,, my approach to having an on-licence air rifle is purely the advantage of pellet velocity of shot over normal air gun ranges. An almost instantaneous hit gives even the wary-est rabbit little time to bolt away at the sound of the action being fired. The further you are from your target, the more chance it has of hearing the alarm of the shot being fired and bolting for cover. I originally went the FAC route to hit mink hard from ranges of about 20 to 30 metres or so. These are incredibly aware and switched-on, nervously twitchy animals and shooting at them with a 12 ft/lb spring rifle, even at these ranges, gives them enough warning to flash off out of the way of the pellet. You have to catch them completely unaware to hit and kill one effectively. And that's not often. People make the mistaken conception that a 20-30 Ft/lb air rifle will instantly enable you to hit out to double your normal ranges. It doesn't quite work out like that. It is not a given advantage you will be able to hit out to 100 yards or even further with precision accuracy often, unless you put the practice in to completely re-educate yourself about your rifle and pellet's range performances at the higher FPE scale. I really, honestly find with my HW80 .22, which is a beautifully accurate 20+ ft/lb rifle, that my hunting range distance advantage has improved by about ten to fifteen metres with the extra oomph. In other words, I can shoot as confidently at a rabbit or pigeon at 45-60 metres as I can at 25-40 metres with sub-12. A rabbit is still a tiny target enough at 45 metres! I have hit rabbits out to 130 metres with my HW80 but, these are rare moments when all conditions are perfectly aligned. And I still say, more misses occur at short 10 to 20 metre ranges than longer ones if we are being totally honest. I still reach for my sub-12 ft/lb rifles more often for general hunting sessions, than I do my HW80. Sound field craft and precision accurate shooting to controllable range distances are the essential tools you need before sheer pellet oomph. But, take those reasonable ranges and good field craft and match them with a rifle that can deliver a shot hard and decisively in a fraction of the time of a sub-12 shot and you have the basis of how FAC air really has an advantage. So worth getting your ticket for! If I was purely interested in longer range striking distances, I'd get the best rifle of the lot and buy a decent .22 LR. All the best. Simon 6 Quote Link to post

The one 8,477
I think you will still use your airgun its handy in building where a rimmy couldnt be used and if you get vermin control on your ticket the fox that pops up you can shoot where you couldn't with the airgun 1 Quote Link to post
David.evans 5,323
Your [BANNED TEXT] the one , but I think that Mitch has only applyed for fac air ! , not sure tho Quote Link to post
