Rabbit Hunter 6,613
My terriers are and always have been quiet when tied on a dig FD, that is a real pet hate I have, dogs that are wild in their boxes and wild chained up have usually had very little socialisation. 1 Quote Link to post
Rabbit Hunter 6,613
Maybe they've had no discipline then. Quote Link to post

Apache... 2,588
I wouldn't take any other dog to a dig other than the dog your going to dig, it doesn't serve any purpose I know where RH is coming from but all the rearing etc should be done away from a dig, when there ready to go a train could go past them and they shouldn't flinch. 2 1 Quote Link to post
dytkos 17,784
Any young dogs I have, lurchers or terriers are taken out and allowed to be around whatevers happening, they learn to behave to the situation, part of schooling/socialising/education. No drama. Cheers, D. 3 2 Quote Link to post

Squirrel_Basher 17,100
In my experience on the subject ,the entering of a terrier should be carried out casually ,no fuss no winding the dog up .Each to their own but it's no coincidence the best terriers come from the most laid back lads .Socialising ,obedience and generally getting out on a bit of mouching all leads up to the day when breeding is expected to shine through and nothing you can do from that day on ,apart from treating them well and what they are shown ,will influence how that terrier turns out. Those that havnt self entered of mine have been very few and were very noticeable in every day life leading up to entering .. Take the young terrier to an earth collared up and let him wander not geeing him up on the first hole you want him to go in .It's never bothered me that the first few times may have been uneventful because I know just by watching the dog that his time will come.. I want a dog to enter confidently on its own ,to want it ,not through any intervention of my own . Get this right and you are on the road to breeding good stock ,only in my humble opinion of course . 5 1 Quote Link to post
dillydog 8,463
Spot on FD, don't follow that reply up because it can't be bettered. I mooch around the stream behind my house with every pup I have, from 8 weeks old upwards they're given free reign to piss about and take it all in. At 8 month old upwards I'll let them walk over earth's (on a lead) just to see if they mark it. Maybe it won't be the first earth, maybe it won't be the first day, but within a few earth's or days I'll guarantee they'll be marking strong desperate to get in and investigate the smell that's firing their curiosity. I NEVER take a pup onto a dig, every single terrier I enter enters naturally on its own, no excuse, no encouragement. It doesn't always go to plan, we're talking about entering, not working, some are God given naturals, some are thick as shit and some take a season to put it all together. .............the joys of terrier work and the stuff that sorts terrier men from cannon fodder Edited because my phone didn't like to say "piss" Edited November 16, 2018 by dillydog 7 1 Quote Link to post
