neil b 2,297
Just a word of warning regarding lending out snipped hobs, a good few years my hunting mate brought in a Jill from supposedly good working lines off a well thought of person, on picking it up he was told it had been left in season last season and was in season at the time, so he put his snipped hob in with it. The following season the same hob went over all his Jill's all of mine and various other Jill's, when the time came to breed some kits to keep a line he has had for 30+ years we lined 4 Jill's to 3 different hobs, all of which had produced kits previously, no kits were born that spring so we tried different Jill's to different hobs with the same result no kits. We were on the verge of losing this line. After a chat with a vet he did some research and came to the conclusion the brought in Jill possibly had a infection, passed it to the hob who whilst sowing his oats had passed on the infection to all the other Jill's making them infertile. Luckily some of his stuff had gone down to the midlands to a lad who has kindly let him take them back to get some kits from this season, fingers crossed maintaining his bloodlines, we have 4 different Jill's going over 2 unrelated hobs. It has been a costly lesson but also a learning curve. Just a thought for the future 2 Quote Link to post
