Shamo 319
Flew Bird today at 1lb 53/4oz. He flew FREE the whole session! Went up into Trees etc and came down to the Glove well. He was a little distracted by Crows mocking him and little Hedge Sparrows flying around, but he came every time. Finished with a short 20ft flight from the Perch to the Glove and let him eat 3/4 a DOC. Gave him 2 DOC's to bring his weight down a little more to see if he will react to the Rabbit/Lure, as he wouldn't again today. I will have to remember that as he gets more muscular the weight may stick on him, will watch his reactions and give him a 'feel' now and then to check his Keel Bone and Breast. Will keep you informed....if you want me to? For now though nothing more to say, will let you know when he gives the Rabbit/Lure a going over. Once again any free tips/advice invited folks. Meant to say he was put in his Weathering and finished the morning with a drink and a good Bath. Everything going OK for him at the moment..... Edited December 22, 2007 by Shamo Quote Link to post

trappa 518
Well done shamo! Theres nothing like flying free for the first time- better than any drug! you cant beat that feeling!!!!! Feeling the keel is important, but dont rely on that alone for a few years yet ( long story). She wont put muscle on for a while yet, you will need to fly her hard for a while before she does. Shamo 319
My MHH is flying free and flying well with very little hesitation when I whistle. He follows on through quite thick Tree Lines and a nice distance until I whistle him again. If I take him out for an hour or so he only spends about 5 Minutes, in total, on my Glove, for a morsel and to know when his Jesses are held he can't fly. I hold him close to my chest when I don't want him to fly and I have the Jesses, I hold him out full length of my Arm when I want him to fly. Hopefully when hunting he will be in a Tree or Hedgeline. Today he flew low into a Hadge through the middle of a Field, I thought he was a little tired maybe, because he could of gone up into low Trees which were there. I went through into the other Field expecting him to follow on, but he didn't, I tried to whistle and he wouldn't come, he was distracted by something, I carried on walking. I turned back around to look at him and he jumped down out of the Hedge and started to stab at something with his Feet. I couldn't make it out at first, then as I got closer I saw it was the rotten carcass of a Fox! He was stabbing at the Head and tried to drag it around, quite successfully for a 1lb 51/2oz Bird!! Anyway I got a Chick out and lifted him off the Fox......thinking to myself "if only". I wish he would show a little more aggression to a dead Rabbit I give him when we are out. Trying to get him jumping on it and chasing the Rabbit/Lure, he seems a bit unsure of it. He does attack it and eat it in his Weathering though.....Is it just the new surroundings, outside of his Mews? Should I bring him down even lower than 1lb 51/2oz? He sits at 1lb 7oz when he has gorged on Rabbit the day before. Once again any tips appreciated? PS: Seriously thinking of getting a Female now, one which has done less than him, so I can now bring her on together with him, with my Son to help out when he can. Any advice on that too?
