Just out of interest Aussie whip what time of year do you do your terrier work is it just the breeding season or do your foxes go to ground in your winter months as having spent a year in Australia I know your winter never really gets that cold and just wonderd if they go to ground or spend all there time on top layed up in the bush land only going under to cub ?

Most fox hunting here is in winter and most hunters want them flushed out to staghounds or guns so try to avoid spring cubbing. The foxes seem to be in the ground most of the year but are often out sunning themselves on sunny winters days in tussock etc.I think digging's not that popular as a lot of areas are not diggable.Snakes are also a big problem in summer in the areas foxes haunt so not worth losing your dogs to.It's such a small sport here as most hunters chase pigs(,in nsw anyway)

I've got a russell pup from a line of workers, but at just 5 months he's already 7kg and not fat.Ive got a2year old bitch off the same people who has matured to 7kg but is small and heavy. Is the pup going to be too large for den work,he's already taller than the bitch.

Mine was 9 kg at 6 months

7.5 years old and 10 kg and a bit

Yours will be in middle..

I've been piggin and the missus used to catch pigs for the chillers and also ran a chiller, but I've always liked my ferreting with dogs, ratting and now getting into fox hunting. The good thing is I get onto properties that wouldn't consider letting pig hunters on due to bad ethics by a percentage of them.

SHH Aussie whip Don't spread that secret about we fox hunters have a bit of respect up our sleeves that pig hunters shit all over years ago. Dens in Australia are smaller than those over seas usually scratched out rabbit burrows. I have a big terrier and he does struggle to get to his fox a smaller terrier is much handier and a lot of my mates only use bitches because of this doesnt matter about his height if he has a small chest he will be able to do his job.
