177 or 22

Recommended Posts

a .177 fly’s faster and straighter than a .22 giving you a more forgiving calibre for the point of aim but a . 22 does seem to hit harder

I hunt with a .177 and the rabbits don't complain I only do head shots and a .177 will kill it as well as a .22 I take rabbits for 8-45 yards on a regular basis if you take close shots i.e. only to 20yrds you could use a flat head pellet giving a more knock down i use either JSB domed or Logun penatrators and the loguns hit fooking hard and now they don't put my gun above 12ftlb

It's been said really but like for like the .22 is heavier than the .177.

On the basis they both produce 12ft lb the .177 flies faster and can be more accurate but on a number of small quarry, rats, birds etc this means that it can sometimes go clean through not imparting all its energy into the quarry. Being faster and with a flatter trajectory it is also the favoured target tool at HIGH LEVEL competition.

The .22 is seldom used for serious competition although many people target shoot with them. Having a larger frontal area than a .177 and being heavier its tends to do more quarry damage and shot for shot will tend to kill more efficiently than a .177.

That is the basics, that is the norm and that is the majority view. I suspect there are many that will read this and come firing back telling me that is b******t but please take the time to read what I have said several times, carefully, first.

PS

The .20 was introduced and developed in an attempt to combine the best of both worlds. (problem is its not as fast and flat as a .177 and doesn't arrive with the thump of the .22).

The .25 has little practical use except as an excellent rat gun.

ive always been a dyed in the wool .22 man but i hear so many good things about .177 and the number of people switching to.177 has persuaded me to buy my next gun in .177..... after all a .177 pellet to a bunnys head is still a big round to get hit with.lol,i imagine not far off a human being hit in the head with .50!!you wouldnt be getting up again!

12ft lb

The .22 is still a better low power killing tool shot for shot.

The .177 is without doubt faster and flatter and therefore in the right hands potentially more accurate. :notworthy:

However, you need to be more accurate with it as it does not arrive with the thump of the .22. You do not have quite the margin of error on the shot that you do with a .22.

IF you are a good, and consistantly good shot, the .177 is an admirable hunting tool. In many cases against many quarry you need to take the head shot with a .177, against a rat for example, there is every chance a .177 will go clean through the body and it will run off. Not saying the same can't happen with a .22 but shot for shot on that basis you are more likely to stop ratty with the .22. Plenty of people can be consistantly accurate on a range but when you go out hunting, on various terrains, at various distances, day and night, in assorted weather and temperatures the .22 gives you a small extra margin.

So, people use .177 for hunting but if you are not accurate you will get more runners. It's a bit like the old chicken and egg this one, the .177 is more accurate shot for shot but does not arrive with the thump, the .22 arrives with more thump but is harder to be accurate with. :hmm:

I take your point on the comparison with heads but you are comparing 12ft lb with with a .50 (power range between around 4800-8200ft lb). Whilst dead they may be in both cases, the terminal ballistic effect would be very very different.

The only time I would now have a .22 is if I went FAC I have owned .22 in 12ftlb but thought I would give .177 ago and it just suits me. It’s a personal thing I think I have shot with people that use .22 and they have out shot .177 and vice versa

You will find that you prefer to shoot with one or the other both are capable of target and hunting. How ever if I was using mine for close rats etc I would use hollow or flat head pellets and as I only take head shoots if I hit its dead if I miss then it lives for next time.

A .20 and .25 I would not bother with as pellets are not as available or as much choice like with the .22 and .177 also again I personal would not bother unless FAC

But you should not be hunting until your grouping is on the ball and you can just distance quite well
