Richard Collett 102
So I went to the range yesterday and took my mate and his two boys to the range for their first time to have a shoot. I let them choose what rifles they wanted to take between the HW77k, HW99S or the Rotex RM8. Both found the HW99s hard to cock with their short arms so the youngest (11) had the Rotex and the oldest (12) got the HW77k. i think the youngest was a little scarred of rifles as he seemed apprehensive but with a little coaching his confidence built up but what surprised me was how good my mates oldest boy was....shooting a springer. Sub 5p group at 27 yards with a 5 shot group that's in and around the bulls eye. To say I was impressed was an understatement, all through the shoot I was trying to coach him with the limited knowledge I have, but he has never shot a rifle in his life and was producing results that has taken me a few month a achieve. I told my mate get him of the play station and get him down the range more often because he has skills and he's at the best age to develop them. I know a lot of us are springer shooters so we understand that it takes a skill to be able to produce pellet on pellet results. A rifle is only as good as the shooter and on this occasion a novice took one of the best springers ever made and bossed it 5 Quote Link to post

Richard Collett 102
This little man defo has a natural talent and I told my mate they are more then welcome to come shooting with me, these boys are normal hyper active kids but I tell you what as soon as they was on the range they was good as gold, calm, mature and a pleasure to teach. My mate told me his birthday is coming up soon and if it's a sport he takes a liking to he would like to buy him his first rifle. So my next question is advise on a rifle, I thought the HW99s would be perfect but he struggled with it, could just about cock and load a HW77K but the rifle has some weight behind it. I did say to my mate if you went down the PCP route I think an air arms s200 would be perfect but want to encurage him to learn the art of shooting with a springer first. I suppose my question is what you have brought your kids as a first rifle? Quote Link to post

mattwhite 1,993
My eldest who is 11 soon is the same pal. He can out shoot me with a springer and I'm not kidding! When I had the tx, he could get tighter groups off a rest than I could at 25 yards and loves target shooting but I can't tempt him out hunting yet. Weekends he's playing rugby for his team and training week nights but that's better than being stuck in front of the telly?? 3 Quote Link to post
