moxy 617
It can be a lucky dip at times Once had a cat in a drop box. I wasn't expecting that at all. Near on shit my pants when I lifted the lid and it came flying out at me. Quote Link to post
neil cooney 10,416
LOL, he was probably heavier coming out than when he went in. Quote Link to post
Terrier15 52
I've just reset a couple of them with corn and chick crumb in them. Saw a hog on my walk about near the compost, assume it's the same one. Hopefully he won't walk straight in! Will work out how best to baffle them tomorrow evening. I have some monarch traps out and a couple that I think are rabbit live traps (these are the ones that have the hogs in!). Quote Link to post
Squirrel_Basher 17,100
Hedgehogs seem to be one of the few animals that become trap bound .That is to say getting released doesn't put them off re entering but the exact opposite .Years ago when they were treated no better than a rat ,putting a dead hog on top of a tunnel trap brought success immediately for some reason .Nowadays ,rightly so they are looked upon as harmless . 1 Quote Link to post
Terrier15 52
Just checked traps. They were baited with corn... there he was, pretty sure same hog in the same trap!! Will baffle tomorrow! Quote Link to post
neil cooney 10,416
He was looking for the meat that's usually left out for him, simple as that, LOL. Quote Link to post

neil cooney 10,416
Hi, Got some live traps for rats set around the place. Last couple of nights have been finding hedgehogs in there. I check them twice a day so just realise them with no harm done. Is there anything I can bait them with that will attract the rats but put off the hedgehogs? Thanks Are you using a meat type bait ?Hedgehogs shouldn't enter a trap if you're using grain as bait, but rats will. I caught hedgehogs for 9 or 10 days in a row in a cat trap when using dog food as bait. On the 2nd last day I marked the Hedgehog with a bit of whitewash and sure enough he was in the trap the next morning. I had been catching the same one all along. I've caught plenty of hedgehogs in cages baited with nuts for squirrels or carrot and apple for rabbits. Strange but it happens Checked a Mink cage trap this morning that had two eggs in it for bait. As I got to it I could see the roof gone of the tunnel. I thought the trap had been stolen. I found it about 20 foot away. Upon inspection it was obvious there'd been a bird in it, judging by the few feathers I'd say a Chaffinch , but the trap was 100% yet there wasn't one bit of flesh or skin in it. Apart from a few feathers every little bit of the bird was gone. Annoyingly I have a fox trap nearby that has two fresh Magpies in it as bait, untouched. Quote Link to post

neil cooney 10,416
Don't know if you're giving me a bit of a bollocking there Eddie ,and maybe I deserve it. When feeding my fowl a bit of grain gets spilt left ,right and centre and goes into every nook and cranny and the birds follow. Hence the reason I use cage traps. Tunnels with tight entrances don't stop them. On the plus side, I have a very tame Robin ,who's NEARLY eating out of my hand, several Yellow Hammers and a flock of Tree Sparrows feeding around my pens which is impressive. Especially nice to see the Tree Sparrows. Quote Link to post

That's why they often ignore bait in a trap, especially if it's set close to a chicken coop etc. 1 Quote Link to post
