sidney567 0
My dad who has always had running dogs has recently thought about getting a new dog, however he's broke his back and leg and cant really walk too far without paying for it the next day. He no longer works and was thinking about getting two Italian Greyhound and maybe having a litter of pups off them. Does anyone know of any reputable breeders? Quote Link to post

He no longer works and was thinking about getting two Italian Greyhound and maybe having a litter of pups off them. Does anyone know of any reputable breeders? put this on another forum and you will get hung before opening your mouth!!! i will attempt to tell you my experiences so far im a novice italian owner/keeper , only having had them for almost 3 yrs although it was a 30 yr dream come true when i got my first and now im up to 5!!! sadly the majority of the lines in the uk are prone to fragile bones, whether this is bad breeding , nature , nuture you decide? they are like whippet puppies on speed 24/7 , dislike the cold , at times are hard to house train although i have to say mine are very good? whether i have been lucky or just correct in my training who knows? most breeders will expect to be on a list , will retain half ownership and the pups will be endorsed? they are not for the faint hearted and do leap like cats and will climb like monkeys, certainly not a dog for someone with limited mobility? they want attention all of the time and will demand as such in no uncertain terms!! they can be yappy and attention seeking ? you will get pups at high prices on sites such as epupz , some will be from good lines some will not be , its a minefield to say the least!!! the italian greyhound club will freely give advice as will rescue but be prepared for endless questions etc they are not a breed with high numbers born yearly , therefore most show breeders are booked well in advance, and it is frustrating getting knocked back time and time again , the also have relatively small litters 2/5 so as you will see there is rarely surplus to be advertised? i hope this helps you with some of your questions? robinhood 0
italian greyhounds are a pain in the arse they are a problem to house train and they get injured alot they also cost a fortune although there is a fella on epupz selling whippet/italian greyhound cross pups Quote Link to post
Guest little lurcher
they can be difficult to house train , just takes time and patience? my arguement is they are meant to e a greyhound in miniture, so therefore there such be no further risk then say with a greyhound puppy? sadly the lines are so closely bred and people tend to treat them as china dolls, they do not build up bone density as young pups? think of a child being made to sit still all day for months on end then let him run around? injuries will occur!! there is at present approx 16 main breed faults in uk italian greys!!! the can have terrible teeth andmouth problems too , mine are fed on a varied diet with raw meaty ones and im happy to say even my 14 yr old stil has a good few teeth!! please do not think i know much about the reed i do not , i can only go on my experiences of a lifetime with running dogs and my little time within this breed, in answer to someone can they work , yes they can ut they are not an out and out working dog, some will do it some wont , the old girl here regularly caught rabbits as big as her with her old owner , my 3/4 bred also catches happily and my bitch in avatar is also part italian and pre an done hares and rabbits and is one of the gamess dogs ive ever owned!! the can have a terrier like attitude the chap on epupz i know of and my blue dog on my site is the grandfather Quote Link to post

Guest little lurcher
like i said the old girl here was used on rabbits in her younger days, a friend took my 3/4 bred out for a joke and caught 2 rabbits with the ferrets then whilst out lamping that night my big bitch couldnt see the rabbit doing a sing and dance in field ( thought she was steptoes greyhound at that point and was ready to send her to specsavers !) so little 13 3/4 inch tippy flew out motor window and nailed it by the hedge!! mine also lure course and free run as much as they like so yes given the right upbringing SOME COULD work although time to allow the bones to mature would imo be longer given the risk of leg breaks? my showbred killed my sons pet rabbit in the garden and will mark where a rabbit is here is an earlier thread with pics of some of mine on http://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/index...mallest+lurcher Edited December 15, 2007 by little lurcher Quote Link to post
