What Does Being British Mean To You?

Recommended Posts

Oddly enough I have found more of the England I remember and would like to see again since I have lived in ireland.

They teach their own history in school, they fly the national flag outside school, they retain their own language (no f****r really understands it but that's not the point)

They are polite to each other, they will help you if you are stuck.....got a problem? Strangers will be arriving in tractors and various machines to help, people from up the road will be fetching you dinner without being asked or having asked if you want it, kids will behave because they don't want to bring shame in the family.

No one dreams of nicking your stuff as you are all pretty much just the same, if they do there is uproar.

The guards don't have to send half the army and 28 vans of coppers to two blokes having a barny outside the pup......one guard, calm down son and home most of the time.

They are just easy on each other, they look on baffled if you tell them about "black history month"........its not that they are raving racists it's just that they don't understand why you would have it in a country that's not historically black?!!

They don't beleive it when you say you can't fly the St. George's flag outside your house or that some council official wants to drive you mad if you put up a shed that's too big !

I have found a home here amongst people who look like me, speak my languge and share my values.......how odd that I had to travel to ireland to find England.

You'll be surrounded by building sites if you don't stop advertising how good it is where you are, greenbelt in england is being built on at a rapid rate, housing shortage they reckon, wonder why ?

To me it's the indomitable spirit in the face of adversity where we Brits historically come to our own.   The Battle Of Britain fighter pilots outnumbered 4-1 but still went up every day and fought

The best thing about being British is that you dont have to be American.

The trouble around the Balkans was fermenting from 1919 onwards after the end of the 1st world war and Germany invaded Checkslovakia in1938 twice, the second time totally annexing it basically a land grab. Hitler then began eyeing Poland as a possible hinderance in his land aquisitions so he was preparing for the invasion of Poland The Spanish Franco Civil war was also instrumental from 1934 to 39 in encouraging Hitlers ambitions. The British and the French had ignored the Check annexation but had decided Germany invading Poland would be a step to far, Diplomacy failed Poland prepared its forces for the inevitable invasion and Britain and France Declared war on Germany the commencement of the 2nd world war had begun spreading across Europe and into Russia. America had stayed neutral and didnt join untill Japan took the opportunity to bomb Pearl Harbour thus bringing America into the theatre of war which then encompassed Europe North Africa the Near and Far East so it became a world war..

Amazing how our own history has been forgotten and corrupted. all jokes aside not only Britain but Europe is finished, people tying themselves in knots denying facts and logic to justify their own life choices.

Potato famine. lol

Sorry Jonjon79......you put Irish and British in the same sentence there. You must have made a typo.

Most people in Britain have no idea what the famine was or what it actually meant.

A million + starved to death and the same again having to emigrate.......they dont know about any of that.

It means nothing if you don't explain mate ;)

a British author this year released a book about the potato famine in 1845 and he wanted to set the record straight and denounce the tales from the Irish that the British deliberately let them starve by exporting all the other crops back to Britain. While doing his research he found out that it was true and he went ahead and published his book stating that the British/English did in fact cause the famine and 1 million plus died and a few million emigrated as a result.

was that museum in the north.

I have been to the famine museum and its shocking when you know the fact, more shocking still is that we treated people who live 50 miles away from the mainland and are exactly the same ethnically worse than we treated some of the fuzzy wuzzys in darkest Africa.

The Irish were held in no regard at all that's as plain as day.

I think some of those annexations were actually justified especially the Sudetenland, ethnically German but handed over to other countries. The Versailles treaty was a badly thought up idea that exacerbated the economic collapse of Germany and resulted in the rise of the Communists and Nazis.

The Soviets also invaded northern Poland a couple of weeks after the Germans did and was part of the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact where they had secretly agreed to divide Eastern Europe into spheres of influence.

Worth noting is that the Japanese and Germans (due to treaty) declared war on the USA not the other way around.

Sudetenland annexation was justified? possibly but no different than Palestine lands being handed over to create the state of Isreal then dividing the remainder of Palestine into West Bank and Gaza with a newly created state called Isreal in between in 1947 LOL Much the same as West Pakistan and East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) with the state of India in between both the Palestinian and the Pakistani demarkation boundaries planned and made by Britain in 1947 in the hope that both would become failed states as Britain supported India and Isreal seems to be a pattern emerging they along with their Allies are hoping to do the same in Syria, and Iraq. TheBritish Americans and Russia did the same division of East and West Germany and The British dived the North from The South in Ireland in 1916 seems to be a history of divide and try to conquer

I agree

Actually I was going to add something about the Middle east, there are sort of parallels with false borders being drawn separating people who are the same, and was going to use the Sykes–Picot agreement as the perfect example.

My wife was born on an army base in germany but she isn't German ;)

Military bases are the same as Embassies they fall under the Jurisdiction of the Country in them and for legal purposes are classed as part of the country occupying them hence Diplomatic priviledge

Being British to me is walking and hunting the lad my grandparents did, drinking the same Ale in the same pubs they did.Visiting every corner of our Isle and exploring the fauna and flora.Having the hairs on the nape stand at the sound of a bagpipe,a Welsh choir or an English or Irish folk singer.Living in a democracy that tilts to the side ive little in common with and walking daily past the most beautiful women in the world, plus finest lurchers and terriers.

F@ck those are fine words Morton, I am yet to read the rest of this thread but that post makes me wish I was British, and that is the first time I have ever said that.
