trigger2 3,146
Thanks NANs pat, that's a fair old test drive though ( 20 miles ) , I know a timing belt having been changed is very important is it around 100 000 it should be done and also if the seller says it's been done but does,nt have a receipt is there any way of checking ? Cheers ask them for the number of the garage that done the work, then give them a call it should be on there records. i bought the motor ive got now off some bird she told me the cambelt had just been done. i got a load of old reciepts of work done by here local garage i give them a call and it was the fan belt not the cambelt lol. close enough and in my opinion a easy enough mistake for a bird to make lol. morton 5,368
As above , not being at all mechanically minded what would be the things I should be looking for first when buying a second hand diesel van ? I,m thinking timing belt but any other suggestions would be appreciated. Cheers A diesel engine.

stumfelter 3,034
The pinion ring on the flywheel is a common fault with diesels and sometimes people have them reamed as a quick fix, a proper fix is expensive so the first thing you should ask the seller is "have you ever had your ring reamed". Fieldsporthunter 1,864
A log book, a vin plate and a set of chassis numbers especially if coming from county durham Your not kidding, only place where you can see a horse on bricks
rob284 1,682
back box back springs ,and tyres and get behind it and let some one put ther foot down on accelerater and check for thick black smoke if its there walk away ,check vin number on dash on front windscreen to make sure it matches log book ,my mate got done last year with a ringer on false platesnothing wrong with an initial puff of black smoke when you boot it. It's when it constantly pours it out when you press the pedal, that's when its bollixed. Also give the body a good rocking and listen for any knocks, if it knocks, a few bushes will be needed for the next mot. Check oil cap for any creamy mayo looking stuff, if so stay away, head gasket will have gone. Also sniff the oil for any diesel in it, could mean problems.
