bullmastiff 615
As a lot of people seem to feed the BARF diet to their dogs, do any of you give a rest day? what I mean is not feeding the dog at all on one particular day of the week and just leaving them water. I think it used to be a standard practice years ago as it's supposed to help the dogs 'clear out' their digestion? same as wolves/wild dogs not eating for 3-4 days between meals. Guest Ditch_Shitter
Never bothered with that myself, mate. Domestic Dogs aren't living in the wild. They get used to their routines. If I didn't feed my lot one day, 'out of the blue', there's be chaos and I'd get no peace. Why dissapoint ye Dogs? I just feed them each what I judge they individually need at every meal. And they get that meal every day. Never had a problem.
Guest tawny
dogs can go days withut food, they're guts are designed to take as much food as they can ,when they can. in the wild they may only have one feed a week at times, but i dont think it would be a good thing for domesticated dogs. i think the barf diet is the best way to feed any dog, but as ditch say's they must also get into a routine. i try to give mine a day off if i can but give in to thier barks and whines after a few hours. best to feed them what they need when they need it i would think

Guest tawny
I'm not well enough versed to understand how it would play out for a working dog, though it did seem to work well enough for Stanley Mathews (Monday was Detox day). i tried detox days only drinking water but was back on the bottle within a day or two
Guest MOLLY
Mine quite often have rest days from food. They soon get into the routine of not getting fed occasionally the same as they do about being fed and i get no whines or moans about it. Supposed to be very good for them. Moll. ghostlyease 17
Always had a rest/fast day for all mine once past a year old, different things suit different folk and their dogs, feeding is so very personal.
Guest little lurcher
my dad does a semi fast day, they just have a load of bones, i dont i feed 7 days a week i feel they are in routine and if it aint broke dont fix it ? very much each to their own and i think this is an old theory imo
kreet 0
imo if feeding a dog a barf or raw diet then your trying to stick to whats more natural for them so if its natural to go a day or two without a feed then a day without once a week or every ten days is totaly upto you personaly i sometime's miss a feed but they have a constant supply of buiscut most of the time and have fish and meat on alternative days so if i dont miss a day with the bulldog he just puts on loads of wieght but always feed the whippet 7days with a pound of mince and handfull of redmills then a pound of fish the next day then 2 days meat 1 day fish just switch about i she drops condition if i dont keep on top of her meals and make sure she's eating enough . the bulldog male would eat all day every day if i let him but easy goe's two days without a feed with just water and never looks any diffrent usualy looks better for it . i do think that it is good for them to have it changing all the time keeps them ready for change rather than in a constant boaring same every day stuff. just my opinion. leegreen 2,150
As a lot of people seem to feed the BARF diet to their dogs, do any of you give a rest day? what I mean is not feeding the dog at all on one particular day of the week and just leaving them water.I think it used to be a standard practice years ago as it's supposed to help the dogs 'clear out' their digestion? same as wolves/wild dogs not eating for 3-4 days between meals. I occasionally fast my dogs more in the summer months, didn't realise it was called the BARF diet though and sometimes it is convenient when I forget to get food out the freezer. But again dogs makeup allows them to be able to go without food for days and anyway it might make them think abit more about catching their grub.
